Item ANALYSIS OF FATIGUE AMONG SINGAPORE BUNKER TANKER SEAFARERS AND MITIGATION STRATEGIES(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2024-07) CAPTAIN MD RANAKUL ISLAMItem ANTIFUNGAL STUDY OF Fusarium SPECIES CAUSING SEA TURTLE EGG FUSARIOSIS (STEF)(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2020-06-21) Puteri Arlis Tsharina binti Jazlan ‘ArifSea Turtle Egg Fusariosis (STEF) is an emerging disease caused by Fusarium species. This soil-borne pathogenic fungus had been infecting turtle eggs worldwide consequently, reducing their hatching success. Therefore, objectives of this study were to obtain the natural antifungal products that could inhibit Fusarium species and effective to be applied into the nests. All Fusarium species were obtained from Laboratory for Pest, Disease and Microbial Biotechnology (LAPDiM) culture collection originally isolated from eggs and soils of different hatcheries in Pahang and Terengganu. The cultures were subculture on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) as working plates. Three species of Fusarium had been selected; F. falciforme, F. oxysporum and F. proliferatum. Antifungal assay by applying turmeric and neem ethanol-based was following the poison plate technique. The concentration of natural antifungal products used were 10%, 20% and 30% with four replicates each. Observation of growth and inhibition percentage were collected every two days for eight consecutive days. Inhibition percentage was calculated using a formula; control plate diameter growth - tested antifungal plate diameter growth/control plate diameter growth x 100%. Since F. oxysporum was found the most abundant, it was tested for sand inoculation technique. Spore suspension with 2.4 – 4.5 x106 inoculum concentration was prepared and pipetted into the universal bottles of damp sterilised sand. Then turmeric and neem were added after a week of fungi incubation and colony-forming unit (CFU) counting was performed. Results from poison plate showed that 10% of turmeric was greater than other treatment to inhibit Fusarium. However, sand inoculation showed that neem was the greatest results to inhibit Fusarium. In conclusion, both neem and turmeric could inhibit Fusarium species and had a potential to reduce STEF issues at the turtle nesting sites. Nevertheless, there is more research work to understand this antifungal to aid sea turtle conservation management.Item ANTIOXIDANT ENZYME ACTIVITIES AND PROTEOMIC ANALYSIS IN THE SCLERACTINIAN CORAL Acropora digitifera IN PULAU BIDONG(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2022-06) NUR ATIQAH BINTI MAZNANItem Assessment of fish biodiversity around artificial and natural reefs in Terengganu waters, Malaysia(Fakulti Maritim dan Sains Marin, 2008-11) Fathi Awadh MukhashenThe effectiveness of artificial reefs (ARs) influencing fish composition, biodiversity and biomass were studied from May 2005 to September 2007 in the coastal waters of Kuala Terengganu. Three selected artificial reefs - TRs (tire reefs), CRs (concrete reefs) and CTRs (mixed concrete with tire reefs); and also neighboring natural reef (NRs) were investigated. Two different survey methods viz. fishing survey and diving visual census, were followed using handline/ gillnet operation, stationary visual census and underwater video recording. Altogether, 142 species belonging to 43 families and 88 genera were identified at both artificial and natural reef sites.Item Bioccumulation of anthracene in Lates calcarifer through food(Fakulti Pengajian Maritim dan Sains Marin, 2007-06) Chuen, Yong JawPolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination becomes a serious issue in marine environment. PAHs could be accumulated into fish and subsequently transferred to human through food chain. Hence, this study was undertaken to study the bioaccumulation and depuration of anthracene / PAHs in L. calcarifer. The study was carried out for a period of 41 days where 27 days for bioaccumulation process and followed by 14 days for depuration process. The test was conducted using a continuous flow system. Lates calcarifer was fed with anthracene-contaminated feed at 5 different concentrations which is 0, 5, 10, 25, and 50 mg.kg"1. In another experiment, it fed with 50 mg.kg"1 PAHs-contaminated feed as simulation study to oil spill contaminated feed. Results reveal anthracene and PAHs was accumulated in L. calcarifer and reach steady state within 25 days. During depuration process, more than 80% of accumulated anthracene / PAHs were eliminated from fish.Item Biodegradation of crude oil in seawater using a mixture of oil and heterotrophic bacteria(Fakulti Pengajian Maritim dan Sains Marin, 2007-05) Fatt, Chuah LaiThis project aims to enhance oil biodegradation in seawater. Retardation of crude oil biodegradation in seawater is hypothetically due to the inhibiting metabolites produced by the oil bacterium which inhibit its enzymes. For this purpose, the consortium bacteria with an active oil-oxidizing bacterium (AR3) and two oil-resistant and active heterotrophic bacteria (OG1 and OG2) was formed. The second part was to measure the subsurface current by ONO-self recording current meter and drogue.Item The conservation and management of inshore fisheries of peninsular Malaysia(University of Wales College of Cardiff, 1996-02) Saharuddin Abdul HamidThis thesis addresses the existing arrangements for the management of the Malaysian inshore fisheries, particularly emphasis on fisheries conservation. To provide a framework in evaluating the current system, four key issues are identified, namely, technical conservation measures, fisheries regulations, the fisheries enforcement system and fisheries environmental management. The study includes a questionnaire survey, measuring the perception of the inshore fishermen in six selected regions throughout Peninsular Malaysia. The survey explores and analyses three main issues: the effectiveness of the present regulations, the fishermen's awareness of the fisheries regulations and the performance of the fisheries enforcement unit. Kerteh Port in Terengganu, Gebeng in Kuantan, Tanjung Langsat in Johor and Bintulu Port in Sarawak are four major ports involved in petrochemical industry. It also position as the important defense structure against the potential pathogen that may enter the body system via contact through mucosal surfaces.Item Digestibility of ingredients in two pelleted diets by macrobrachium rosenbergii (de man)(Fakulti Pengajian Maritim dan Sains Marin, 1988-02) Sian, Kenneth Chin SuiThe digestion coefficients of nutrients in two diets containing 307, and 407. protein were evaluated in the Malaysian giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachlum rosenbergii. Chromic oxide was used as an internal marker for the evaluation of digestibility. Evaluations were carried out with juvenile and adult prawns including female prawns undergoing three different stages of gonad maturation. The results indicate, that the adult prawns were able to digest the nutrients of the ingredients better than'" the juveniles. In the two diets te's't'ed* co pr a c ake , ^whea t flour and soyabean meal we^e better digested than^rish meal and shrimp meal for both juvenile and -adult—prawns. Copra cake was found to be a good source of lipids (71-1007.) , carbohydrate (85-967.) and dry matter ( 72-927.) as well as a good attractant. Carbohydrate, gross energy and dry matter were very well digested in wheat flour with values of 931007., 86-957, and 85-977, respectively. Soyabean meal gave good digestion coefficients for protein (84-997.), lipid (90977.) and carbohydrate (80-1007,). The results indicated that copra cake, wheat flour and soyabean meal are good sources of nutrients for M. rosenbergii. No differences in digestibility was observed for the female prawns with green, yellow and orange gonads. This showed that the stage of gonad maturation has no significant effect on digestibility.Item Distribution of fecal coliform and Escherichia coli (E.coli)in the estuaries and coastal water of Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Ibai, Terengganu(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-06) Nurul Syazana YahayaThis study is conducted to evaluate the distribution of fecal bacteria counts including total coliform, fecal coliform and E. coli in the water, sediments and fishes of Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Ibai and coastal areas of Kuala Terengganu. Four sampling trips were conducted during July 2009, November 2009, December 2009 and May 2010 at 20 sampling stations. Fecal bacteria counts were estimated by using Multiple Test Tube Fermentation Analysis. Results of this study showed that during the second sampling (November 2009), 75% of the samples showed fecal bacteria counts exceeding the standard followed by 70% during first sampling, 50% during third sampling and lowest during fourth sampling with 40% of the samples exceeding the bacteria standard based on Water Quality Standards from Department of Environment Malaysia (DOE).
