Item Studies on flatfish larvae in the shelf waters of the centre great barrier reef Australia(University of North Queensland, 1983-02) Hock, Chack LiewOver 14 000 flatfish larvae were col1ected from the shelf waters of the Central Great Barrier Reef, Australia, during August l'J'78 to December 1981, from which 11 types (Fam. Psettodidae and Bothidae) were identified to species. To date, the majority of marine natural products have been obtained from mostly sessile soft-bodied invertebrates, such as sponges and tunicates.Item Omega-3 deterioration rates and fatty acid profiles of selected freshwater and marine fishes kept at defferent storage temperatures(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014) Zamzila Erdawati ZainolShelf-age of fish is determined from the time it was kept in the storage until its ready to be used or consumed by human. Lipid oxidation represents the major fish spoilage due to high composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in fish flesh. Moving towards satisfying the growing industrial demand, fish needs to be store before being consumed, or before further processing. Post harvest techniques such as icing and freezing are important techniques used to slow down lipid oxidation and maintaining the quality of stored fishes. Therefore, this study was conducted with four main objectives. Firstly, to study profile of fatty acids and the profile’s changes of six tropical fishes; Oreochromis niloticus (Red Tilapia), Monopterus albus (Freshwater Eel), Pangasius hypophthalamus (Silver Catfish), Rastrellinger kanagurta (Indian Mackerel), Euthynnus affinis (Mackerel Tuna) and Epinephelus sp. (Grouper) kept in ambient, ice and frozen storage. Secondly, 3 to study the deterioration rate of α -Linolenic acid (ALA), Ecosapentanoic acid (EPA), Docosahexanoic acid (DHA) and total Omega-3 of selected fishes kept at different storage temperature.Item Effect on non-lethal heart shock on HSP70 synthesis, protection against thermal stress and vibrio alginolyticus infection of the Asian green mussel, perma viridis(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-06) Nor Afiqah AlengThe Asian green mussel , Perna viridis, often faces multiple stressors such as environmental temperature changes and bacterial infection, which threaten the survival of this species. In this study, RNAi was used to knockdown Hsp70 in Artemia and to investigate Hsp70 function in embryo development, diapause termination and stress tolerance, with the latter focused on thermotolerance and protection against pathogenic Vibrio.Item Penilaian pembangunan dan perlaksanaan tukun tiruan di Malaysia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Ahmad AliTesis ini membentangkan keputusan kajian perlaksanaan tukun tiruan oleh Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia (JPM) dan unjam-unjam oleh Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia (LKIM) di Semenanjung Malaysia di antara tahun 1975-2010. Data primer diperolehi melalui temuduga bersemuka dan perbincangan menggunakan soal selidik berstruktur melibatkan individu-individu penting yang terlibat dalam merangka polisi dan melaksana program tukun di Malaysia. Kajian ini juga mengkaji faedah sosio ekonomi program tukun tiruan ke atas kumpulan nelayan melibatkan 506 responden di lokasi 68 jeti utama di Semenanjung Malaysia untuk mendapatkan pandangan, kesedaran dan persepsi mereka mengenai program tukun tiruan yang dijalankan pada masa dahulu dan sekarang. Keputusan kajian menunjukkan tukun tiruan menjadi semakin popular sebagai salah satu alat dalam meningkatkan sumber perikanan pantai, kaedah pemuliharaan dan juga meningkatkan tangkapan nelayan tradisi di Semenanjung Malaysia. Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia dan LKIM ialah dua agensi utama yang aktif dalam program ini. Sebanyak 36% peruntukan disalurkan kepada JPM, 63% kepada LKIM dan sebanyak 1% kepada agensi-agensi lain.Item Studies on the polysaccharide-producing bacteria, shewanella putref aciens isolated from marine sponge, theonella sp.(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Lukman Hakim bin Mohd DinMarine sponge, Theonella sp. is found in great quantity from Malaysian’s ocean. Theonella sp. are one of marine sponges that produces a significant bioactive compounds. They are stated to be potential drug lead producers having exceptional structures that are unavailable from terrestrial region. Marine bacteria associated with sponges are significance as new promising source of large amount of biologically active compounds. The aims of this study were to identify polysaccharide-producing bacteria isolated from Theonella sp., to screen selected bacterial polysaccharides for antibacterial and toxicity and to determine composition of selected bacterial polysaccharide, Shewanella putrefaciens. Subsequent to this, bacterial sampling of Theonella sp. from Bidong Island in Terengganu was conducted. A total of seven types of bacteria were identified as Shewanella putrefaciens, Brevundimonas diminuta, Alcaligenes faecalis, Burkholderia cepacia, Fusobacterium varium, Capnocytophaga sp. and Vibrio damsela. S. putrefaciens, Capnocytophaga sp., B. diminuta and B. cepacia were determined as polysaccharide-producing bacteria. Disc diffusion test and brine shrimp lethality test have shown that only S. putrefaciens crude polysaccharide gave antibacterial activity and also toxic towards brine shrimp, Artemia salina. Composition analysis determined S. putrefaciens crude and acidic polysaccharides were hetero polysaccharide consisted of glucose, trehalose and mannose, respectively. Only crude polysaccharide contained trace elements of sulphur and uronic acid with molecular weight of 250.5 kDA. The presence of suphur and uronic acid in S. putrefaciens crude polysaccharide have been significantly ascertained to be sulfated polysaccharide. The presence of trace elements associated with polysaccharide gave positive result and potential value towards medicinal and pharmaceutical purposes.Item Studies of the malayan pangolin (manis javanica desmarest) from Peninsular Malaysia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Muhammad Hafiz bin SulaimanMalayan Pangolin (Manis javanica Desmarest) is threatened by illegal hunting and habitat loss. Conservation efforts are difficult due to lack of information in various aspects. As such, this study was conducted to collect information which could help in the Malayan Pangolin conservation. Questionnaire and interview-based survey was used to obtain hunter’s knowledge about pangolin. Stratified random-sampling techniques combined with snowball sampling were utilized for this purpose. Results showed that the pangolins mostly inhabit lowland primary forest (30.4%) and majority of the hunters (73%) chose tracking method as their most preferred hunting technique. Determination of preferred den and habitat utilization of the pangolins was conducted at pristine forest (Krau Wildlife Reserve), secondary forest (Kampung Sungai Berua) and highly disturbed area (Pos Pulat) by searching for active and non-active dens. Findings showed that hollow logs were mostly preferred by the pangolins to be utilized as a den site (48.36%). Pangolins’ dens were also found abundantly at KWR as compared to KSB and PP, thus prove that pangolins have high adaptation ability and pristine forest serves important habitat for them. For morphometric measurements, it was conducted by measuring head-body length, tail length, total length and weight. Both male and female pangolins showed high correlation between weight and total length with r=0.6342 and r=0.8535 respectively. Similar trend was also shown for correlation between tail length and head-body length. Parasitism is known as one of the cause contributing to the failure of pangolin species husbandry in conservation projects worldwide. From the findings of this study, only one parasite species was recorded on the Malayan Pangolin namely Amblyomma javanense, with more male pangolins being infested by the ectoparasite (88.9%). However, the mean intensity on the female pangolins was significantly higher (72) as compared to the male pangolins (31.6). Overall, this research provided valuable and essential information on the ecological, morphological, parasitological, and hunter’s knowledge of the Malayan Pangolin in Malaysia. Nonetheless, more studies should be conducted in every aspect because there is still much not known about the Malayan Pangolin.Item Melissopalynology and foraging activity of the stingless bees, heterotrigona itama (hymenoptera: apidae) at Taman Tropika Kenyir, Terengganu(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Roziah binti GhaziA study on melissopalynology and foraging activity of stingless bees, Heterotrigona itama (Hymenoptera: Apidae) was conducted at Taman Tropika Kenyir (TTK), Terengganu from April until September 2013. The main aim of this study was to use melissopalynology or pollen analysis in order to determine the foraging preference and active period of foraging activity of H. itama in tropical island of TTK. Overall, there were 59 plant species belonging to 30 families of plants that were visited by H. itama throughout direct observation and melissopalynological analysis in TTK. However, only 27 plant species from 24 families were succesfully identified which include of native species, ruderal species as well as introduced and cultivated species that consist of ornamental trees, underutilised fruits, agriculture fruits and others. The overall result shows that family Flacourtiaceae (Flacourtia jangomas) was the most dominant pollen collected by H. itama, followed by Fagacea (Lithocarpus sp.) and Sapotaceae (Mimusops elengi). Other types of pollen grains were considered as accessory, isolated or occasional pollen grains.Item Tagging, nesting and photo-indentifications of green turtles (Cheloniidae: chelonia mydas) at Chagar Hutang, Redang Island(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Chew, Vicki Yii ChingResearch on sea turtles is primarily done by monitoring and tagging activities on nesting beaches. While tagging allows information on nesting biology to be obtained, tag loss causes bias in sea turtles studies. This study was conducted to obtain a more in-depth analysis on the tagging and nesting data collected by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) from 1993-2014 in addition to exploring the feasibility of implementing photo-identification (photo-ID) in tagging sea turtles. Field work was conducted in March 2013 until May 2014. Tag loss and nesting data was analysed by extracting data from the File Maker Pro database. A total of 1595 green turtles were tagged throughout the 22 years of conservation program at Chagar Hutang. The average intra-seasonal tag loss probability valued at 0.015 and 0.027, and inter-seasonal at 0.256 and 0.253 for Inconel and titanium tags, respectively. No distinct increasing or decreasing trend in tag loss with tag age (year) was observed. The peak nesting season was during May-August where 78.9% of the nestings occurred.Item Plasma and mucosal vitellogenin in the red arowana (Scleropages formosus)(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-11) Ou, Xue YiArowana is an important ornamental fish species and they are perhaps one of the most expensive tropical fish in the world. Sex identification is still a major issue in the arowana farming industry because they lack phenotypic sign of sexual dimorphism throughout their life span which hinders sex selection during culture.
