Item Accumulation of heavy metals in seagrass (Halodule pinifolia and Halophila minor) in Setiu Wetland, Terengganu(IInstitut Oseanografi, 2009-02) Syarifah Noormaisarah Tuan BesarIn this study the metal uptake by two species of seagrasses, Halodule pinfolia and Halophila minor, from the Setiu lagoon was studied by carrying out a monitoring survey of the metal contents in the seagrasses in the lagoon and their bioaccumulation capacity and resultant toxicity investigated by carrying out laboratory sediment toxicity experiments. Many wetlands have degraded due to unsustainable development practices in their surrounding environments including Setiu Wetland.Item Application Of Soft Classification For Sub Pixel Analysis Of Shoreline Mapping Using Simulated Coarse Resolution Satellite Imageries(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-02) Nurliyana Binti Razman; Institute of Oceanography and EnvironmentThis study aimed to explore on image processing techniques to determine the shoreline at the sub-pixel level by using simulated coarse satellite sensor imagery and to examine the potential of soft classification on shoreline mapping of Kuala Terengganu coastal area. In general, to map shoreline require two types of imagery; fine and coarse spatial resolution which taken on the same day, date, time and area. However due to the lack of data obtained, this study used simulated 10 m and 20 m coarse spatial resolution imagery from 2.5 m fine spatial resolution imagery. The performances of three soft classifications on simulated coarse satellite imagery were evaluated mainly Fuzzy Set Theory classification, Bayesian classification and Demspter-shafer classification. Unlike conventional classification, in soft classification the composition information in a pixel can be extracted which allows the shoreline to be mapped within image pixels producing an accurate and realistic prediction of the shoreline. This method was applied to different shape of shoreline extracts; Area I (linear or cross to lying along pixel orientation), Area II (shoreline orientation changes abruptly with respect to pixel grid) and Area III (linear shoreline) for 10 m and 20 m imagery. From the result, it showed that the accuracy of shoreline prediction varied according to shoreline orientation and shape. Shoreline generated from contouring soft classification for linear shoreline area (Area III) produced the most accurate predicting shoreline with RMSE value less than 1.4 m from Fuzzy Sigmoidal classification. When the shoreline was aligned exact parallel to the column of the pixel grid, the accuracy was increased. However, in certain area, Bayesian showed the potential on producing shoreline with RMSE lower than 2 m. Overall, the effects of spatial resolution were very similar. The coarser the spatial resolution, the accuracy decreased. Remote sensing is a potential tool for the mapping, monitoring and management of the coral reef ecosystems. In this study, the remote sensing satellite imagery were used to determine coral reef substrates at Lang Tengah Island. Commonly, most marine scientists adopt simple techniques of remote sensing, i.e. hard classification method in their research. However, this study was conducted to examine the potential of soft classification technique to classify coral reef substrates and to compare their accuracy with hard classification technique. The MIKE-21 Neashore Spectral Wave (MIKE-21 NSW) model has the potential of serving as a tool for obtaining accurate estimates of wave field condition along the Terengganu nearshore area.Item APPROXIMATE ANALYTICAL APPROACH FOR NONLINEAR BOUNDARY LAYER THIN FILM FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER ANALYSIS OVER A STRETCHING SURFACE(UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA TERENGGANU, 2021-01) ALI REHMANThe aim of this thesis is to construct mathematical model for nonlinear differential equation of boundary layer flow over a stretching surface and find its approximate analytical solution. The analytical approximate method named Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method (OHAM) is used for the approximate analytical solution. The convergence of the OHAM for particular problems is also discussed. The series solution for both velocity and temperature profiles are calculated by using OHAM. It is an influential approximate analytical technique and various researchers employed OHAM-BVPh 2.0 technique for several flow problems. After implementing the boundary layer approximation on thin film flow model equations, we obtain a set of partial differential equations (PDEs). These equations were transformed into a set of non-dimensional nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) through suitable self-similar alteration method. The dimensional form of coupled nonlinear ODEs one for velocity and other for temperature were obtained through OHAM-BVPh 2.0 package. Furthermore, the impact of the model factors which are involved in velocity and temperature profiles are displayed numerically and graphically. Also the flow problem is discussed geometrically. The skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number is discussed in table form. The main aim of this study is to identify the processes that operate at the selected beaches along the monsoon coast of Terengganu in a year cycle. Beach profiles have been surveyed, and beach sediment samples were collected bi-monthly at each stations studied. During the Northeast Monsoon, the coastline is under the influence of strong waves and currents though during the rest of the year, it is subject to moderate and low hydraulic energy levels with relatively weak waves and currents. Results indicate that the beach profiles show that they experience dynamic changes in a one year period of survey. During the Northeast Monsoon, most of the beach foreshores are eroded with overtopping processes shifting berm crests upward and landward. Sediments from the eroded foreshores are moved down into the water where longshore currents transport them in a downdrift direction to sites of accretion. Located on the west coast off both the states of Sabah and Sarawak, its access to the South China Sea exposes BB to anthropogenic pollution. There are three objectives of this study:-(i) to examine the domestication of international laws in Malaysia; (ii) to examine the efficacy and sufficiency of the existing Malaysian governance framework in governing her marine environment; and (ii) to examine the possibility of designating a TBMPA in BB involving Malaysia (Federal Territory of Labuan and the states of Sabah and Sarawak) and Brunei.Item Biodiversity of zooplankton in estuarine mangroves of Setiu Lagoon, Terengganu(Institut Oseanografi, 2007) Bibi Shaheeda, Amir SharifuddinZooplankton community in the estuarine mangroves of Setiu Lagoon was studied in order to understand the biodiversity status and their relationship with environmental factors. Sampling was conducted throughout year 2004 following the monsoonal season. Eight sampling points were established in the lagoon starting from the upper reach of the estuary (Kuala Katup) to the mouth of the estuary (Pulau Gemia). Three random quadrates were laid horizontally in front of each sampling point where the distance is about 1.5 meter from the mangrove forests. Zooplankton were obtained using a 110pm mesh size of Kitahara net and physico chemical parameters were measured in-situ using a Quanta hydrolab. Fourteen groups of zooplankton have been identified inhabiting estuarine mangrove of Setiu lagoon throughout year 2004 with peak densities found during post-monsoon season (403,963 ind.m"3)and were highly concentrated at St 1 (231,407 ind.m"3) and St 6 (195,520ind.m"J).Item BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY OF MANGROVE BIVALVES WITH THE EMPHASIS ON MUD CLAM, GELOINA EXPANSA (MOUSSON, 1849) IN SETIU WETLANDS, MALAYSIA(UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA TERENGGANU, 2019-11) NURULAFIFAH BINTI YAHYA
