Item Characterization of target-site mutation in 5-Enolpyruvylshikimate-3-Phosphate Synthase (EPSPS) gene from glyphosate-resistant biotype of Eleusine indica (L.) gaertn from Malaysia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-06) Franci JulopThe population of goosegrass (Eleusine indica), resistant to glyphosate (an EPSPS–inhibiting herbicide) was found widespread in several states in Malaysia. However, the resistance levels in this plants which could lead to the understanding of its resistance mechanisms are not well studied. This study was therefore carried out to investigate different levels of resistance of goosegrass to glyphosate by the identification of mutations in the EPSPS gene. Whole plant bioassay confirmed that 9 out of the 20 populations collected were resistant, six populations were susceptible, while five populations were a mixture of resistant and susceptible biotypes.Item Extracts of sponge-derived fungi as potential anti-atherosclerotic agent(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-10) Nurul Faziana KamalCurrent drugs in the market for atherosclerosis mostly involved the reduction of atherosclerotic progression by decreasing the plasma low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. With prolonged use of this drug, it is reported to may cause liver failure. Meanwhile, drugs targeting on high density lipoprotein (HDL) in reducing/preventing the development of atherosclerosis are yet to be developed, although HDL plays an important role in reverse cholesterol transport (RCT). Potential targets in RCT have been identified to prevent atherosclerosis: scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-B1) and peroxisome proliferator response elements (PPRE). This study was therefore carried-out to explore new peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) ligand agonists for the activation of these potential targets, from sponge-derived fungi, as potential drugs for atherosclerosis.Item Cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and quatitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies of stnthesized carbonyl thiourea derivatives on acanthamoeba SPP. and human corneal epithelial cel(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-10) Maizatul Akma IbrahimForty-four synthesized carbonyl thiourea derivatives were evaluated for their potential as anti-amoebic agent, aiming for a new discovery in Acanthamoeba keratitis treatment. The plant regulates the stress by altering sugar content at metabolism level to survive the stress. This study was carried-out to determine the effects of different NaC1 concentrations - 100mM and 200mM/L - on carbohydrate metabolism in aquatic plant, Cryptocoryne elliptica cultures, as a model plant, for 35 days. The aquatic habitats represent stressful environments which are characterized for example by low carbon availability, uncertained availability of nutrient and shaded conditions induce plants to adapt with the environment on its fully potentials. Limited studies of aquatic plants also encouraged the study to be done. The salinity treatments were also carried-out in two different medium conditions: sucrose-contained- and sucrose-free medium. In this study, the accumulation of biomass, starch content and reducing sugar content were determined.Item Synthesis and characterisation of ferrocenyl-azobenzene derivatives for the development of diodes(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-12) Siti Athirah Mohamad JamaliPhotochromic azobenzene derivatives have attracted much attention recently due to their potential applications in the electronic and photonic devices. Molecular framework featuring thiourea derivatives as molecular wire consists of conjugated systems which promises wide range of electronic properties and suitable to be applied in molecular electronics application. Regarding to this matter, this study was carried out to determine the electrical conductivity and performance as OLED of this linear conjugated organic compounds with general formula A-ArC(O)NHC(S)NHAr-D. All synthesized compounds (1-5) were spectroscopically and analytically characterized via CHNS Elemental Microanalysis, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), UltravioletVisible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Ultraviolet-Fluorescence Spectroscopy (UV-F), 1 H and 13 C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Single Crystal X-Ray Crystallography Analysis, X-Ray Diffraction Spectroscopy (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) Analysis. The compounds were fabricated on ITO substrate by using electrochemical deposition method (ECD) before the electrical conductivity and performances as OLED were tested by using Four Point Probe and Two Point Probe. The Gaussian 09 Software was used to calculate the energy band gap and the electrical conductivity of the synthesized compounds to compare with experimental evaluation. The infrared spectra for 1-5 showed five and six significant absorptions within the expected range. From UV-Vis spectra, they show the presence of -* and n-* electronic transitions which referred to C=O and C=S chromophores whereas from UV-F spectra, the emission spectra were observed for 1-5. The 1 H NMR spectra exhibit all expected resonances especially for δH 13 (NH). Whilst, C NMR spectra also show expected resonances of δC (C=O) and δC (C=S) to indicate that these compounds indeed thiourea derivatives. In addition, the energy bandgaps (Eg) of all synthesized compound were measured and confirmed by theoretical calculation. The energy bandgaps (Eg) of these compounds were at around 4.49-4.72 eV and it is in a good agreement with the theoretical calculation. From the electrical conductivity study, these compounds fall in the range of semiconductor materials which is 1.61x10 -4 -4 -1 -1.72x10 Scm under dark condition.Item Development of carboxymethyl cellulose based proton conducting biopolymer electrolytes and its application in solid-state proton battery(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-06) Ahmad Salihin SamsudinThe chronicle in the field of alternative energy for energy storage has shown an excellent progress for the past few years.
