Item The Echo Sounder simulator unit based on microcomputer systems(University of Hull, 1981-09) Mohamad Isa MansorThe aim of the project is to study the possibility of using a microcomputer system to implement an echo sounder simulation. The design flexibility of the microprocessor software enables the development of a simulation program necessary to produce an echo signal suitable for a conventional echo sounder. An optional colour display is provided to give a simultaneous recording of the targets. The colour display is generated on a colour t.v. with a colour display generator capable of providing up to seven colours to represent the varying echo intensity. Also a demonstration of mid-water trawling manoeuvre is provided on the colour display.Item Heavy metal toxicity to rainbow trout, Salmo Gairdneri Richardson, during early development(Fakulti Sains dan Teknologi, 1983) Noor Azhar, Mohamed ShaziliThe toxicity of cadmium, copper and zinc to rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, during early development was investigated. In addition the synthesis of cadmium-binding protein by the perfused rainbow trout liver was studied. It was concluded that; 1) Cadmium is extremely toxic to rainbow trout during early development. A continuous cadmium exposure during embryonic development resulted in almost complete mortality of eggs at 1.0 mgCdl *. Some sublethal effects were also observed in hatched alevins. 2) Embryonic sensitivity was not uniform throughout egg development. The fertilisation process was particularly sensitive to cadmium viexe, exposure. Reductions in the fertilisation of eggs was obtained as a result of exposure to 1.0 mgCdl * and higher. The results also indicated that the period of axiation was sensitive to cadmium exposure as shown by a high mortality rate of eggs in continuous exposure tests. 3) Embryonic sensitivity to cadmium and zinc differed from sensitivity to copper indicating possible differences in toxic actions between these metals. 4) The toxicity of mixtures of cadmium, copper and zinc indicated that the toxicity of these metals to trout eggs and fry could be assessed by the additive toxic unit method to give the total toxicity of the mixture. However sublethal effects and metal uptake studies showed possible departures from additive joint action. 5) Post exposure mortalities may result from brief exposure of fish to cadmium even after restoration to clean water. These results highlight the inadequacy of a standard toxicity test in predicting the consequences of brief exposure to a pollutant.Item The development of a telemetry and position indicating system for a diver(Fakulti Sains dan Teknologi, 1994) Samo, KhalidIn a diving expedition safety is important both to the personnel on board the support boat and the divers. A diver needs to know their bearing and range to the support boat as diving progress to navigate freely in the water and to return to the boat immediately in time of emergency or after completing a task. Ideally, this may be achieved by computing the diver's bearing and range periodically using an underwater tracking system fitted on a support boat and transmitting the information back to them by acoustic means. However, despite the availability of electronic based diver tracking systems, no attempt was made to exploit this idea. The reason being the extensive and rapidly time-variant multipath echoes generated in a shallow water made it difficult to process the coded information if transmitted at high rates due to signal masking. Also, air bubble noise generated through breathing, physical movement and biological noise from snapping shrimps hinders effective propagation and reception of the data signals in the water.Item Studies on some aspects of reproduction of mud crab, scylla serrata (forskal)(Fakulti Sains dan Teknologi, 1997) Tran, Ngoc HaiSome aspects on reproduction of mud crab, Scylla serrata, in captive conditions were studied. By ablation of bilateral eyestalks of the female, 14 batches of eggs were spawned after 5 days of culture in fiberglass tanks. Spawning occurred at any time of day, month and year. Majority of crabs spawned without undergoing molting and mating under culture condition. Crab spawners were mainly in size of 201-300 g. Average fecundity was 1479992.12 ± 17.03 eggs / crab. However, many eggs could not adhere to the pleopods of the female but fell on the bottom of the tanks. Regression between body weight of female and fecundity was significant (p<0.05). In addition, the second spawning of the crabs under captivity was also observed.Item Fisheries and population dynamics of scads, decapterus spp. (pisces: carangidae), in the east coast of peninsular Malaysia(Fakulti Sains Gunaan dan Teknologi, 1997-09) WijoprionoKajian ke atas beberapa aspek perikanan dan dinamik populasi ikan selayang, iaitu Decaptents macrosoma (Bleeker) dan Decapterus russelli (Ruppell), telah dijalankan di Pantai Timur Semenanjung Malaysia.
