Item Population biology of red claw crayfish cherax quadricarinatus (von martens, 1868) (decapoda:parastacidae) in Sungai Macap, Johor, Malaysi(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2012-10) Abdul Wahab AbdullahRed claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens, 1868) originated from Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea and was brought in Malaysia for the aquarium industry in the 1990s. The objectives of this study are to determine the distribution and density of C. quadricarinatus at certain parts of Sungai Macap, to determine the morphological variations between male and female, and to examine the genetic variations between the population in Sungai Macap to other populations of C. quadricarinatus at selected hatcheries and pet shops. The field investigation to determine the distribution, density and morphological variations was carried out for 6 months from January to June 2011 and 3 sampling stations were chosen. For genetic variation study, besides the samples from Sungai Macap, other samples were taken from 2 hatcheries in Subang (Selangor) and Pantai Sepat (Kuantan) and also from a pet shop in Kuala Terengganu (Terengganu).Item Insoluble fraction of shrimp waste as a source of astaxanthin for Tor tambroides fingerlings(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-11) Amirul Aizal Abdul AzizShrimp waste is an important source of astaxanthin, which form as a complex with proteins. This study comprised three consecutive experiments.Item Characterization of Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from diseased fish and the potential of sodium alginate as a carrier for oral vaccine(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-12) Nurul Aqilah IberahimBacterial diseases in aquaculture are considered to be a major cause of fish mortalities. Disease due to Aeromonas hydrophila is one of the most common bacterial diseases in aquaculture. This bacterium causes hemorrhagic septicaemia, abdominal dropsy and ulcers. Effective prevention is necessary to overcome the outbreak of bacterial disease. Thus this study was conducted to isolate, identify and characterize A. hydrophila from diseased fish. The virulence and pathogenicity of the isolates were evaluated for vaccine candidate selection. The in vitro suitability of sodium alginate as coating agent for oral formalin killed A. hydrophila vaccine was evaluated. A. hydrophila were isolated, identified and characterized using conventional biochemical tests. Depuration of POPs from an organism depends on the homeostatic balance of oxidant and antioxidant at its cellular level.Item Colonisation of meiofauna(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-01) Rohayu RamliMost of the morphological adaptations observed in meiofauna whether endobenthic, mesobenthic or epibenthic correlate closely with the substrate. To date, the effect of colonisation on the population dynamics of meiofauna and the mechanism by which they influence on specific habitat are poorly understood. The present study will provides the information about the colonisation rate and modes of the meiofauna into the introduced substrates and the factors which responsible in structuring the meiofaunal community during the colonisation period.Item Cleaning behaviour and expression profiles of immune-related genes in the skin mucus of bluestreak cleaner wrasse, Labroides dimidiatus, in response to its parasite-infected client, the Asian Seabass, Lates calcarifer(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-02) Nurasyila AlliFish disease is one of factor that contributes to mortality in fish farming. Biology treatments were recommended to control and treat fish disease instead of chemical treatments. Biology treatments that have potential are by using cleaner wrasse Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse, L. dimidiatus. L. dimidiatus act by removed parasite from other fish that called client. L. dimidiatus reported to have mutualism relationship with its client. Uniquely, no reports on L. dimidiatus had infected with parasite from its client. So this research are to determine antagonistics behaviour (Pose, bite, twitch, flee,chase and swipe) between L. dimidiatus and its client Asian Seabass Lates calcarifer , to determine immune related gene expression profile (Alkaline phosphatase, Cathepsin B, Cathepsin D dan Cathepsin L) during cleaning activities and to relate both of this research finding. So, 2 L. dimidiatus were placed together with infected L. calcarifer in 2 feet aquarium for 48 hours (2 days) to determine antagonistic behaviour.Item Bacterial communities associated with toxic and non-toxic marine dinoflagellates(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-04) Mohd Ezhar Mohd NoorAssociation between bacteria and marine dinoflagellates is one of the important factors in harmful algae bloom formation and toxin production by dinoflagellates. The diversity of the bacteria associated with clonal cultures of both toxic and non toxic dinoflagellates, Alexandrium tamiyavanichii and Alexandrium leei were assessed by using culture dependent and culture independent approaches. In culturedependent approach, bacteria were isolated on appropiate culture media and later identified based on 16S rDNA sequences. In culture-independent approach metagenome was extracted directly from the cultures of dinoflagellates.Item Diversity of bacterial community associated with marine ascidians from Bidong Island, Terengganu(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-05) Nur Azna SaariMicrobial diversity has been well documented for many marine invertebrate taxa. However, little attention has been given to the examination of microbial–tunicates associations. In the present study, the microbial diversity of marine tunicates was assessed by using both culture-dependent and culture-independent method. Two species of tunicates from Clavelina sp. and Didemnum sp., have been collected from Bidong Island, Terengganu, during pre-monsoon (October) and post-monsoon seasons (May). Bacteria were isolated by serial dilutions and characterized based on colony and cell morphology.Item The study of marine microlagae chlorophyll as dye for hybrid solar cell(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-09) Nik Aziz Nik AliThe solar electricity is presently a rapidly growing but often relatively expensive renewable energy form. Recently however, new molecular photovoltaic (PV) materials have been developed, which could enable a production of low-cost solar cells in the future. To address the latter issues, the development of chlorophyll from marine microalgae based on hybrid solar cell (HSC) with nano structured oxide and conjugated polymer were investigated. Chlorophyll (CHLO) dye from marine microalgae (Chlorella s.p.) has been extracted and their optical properties were study using fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS).Item Durability and effectiveness of coconut fronds from different growth distance from the sea as attractors for fish aggregating devices (FADs)(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-09) HafinuddinTraditional fishermen use coconut fronds (Cocos nucifera) as attractors in fish aggregating devices (FADs) to attract and aggregate fish in the sea. The durability of coconut frond attractors has become an important criteria to minimize the maintenance cost and also to protect the amount of fish around FADs. However, information on how coconut trees from different locations affect the durability of coconut fronds and its impact on fish quantity is still lacking. In addition, the hypothesis explained that the existence of fish around floating objects (FADs) could be related to the habit of spawning aggregation in FADs.Item Modeling coastal vulnerability index to sea level rise for the east coast of Penisular Malaysia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-01) Isfarita IsmailSea level rise is a global phenomenon that all littoral states, including Malaysia, need to plan for. Thus far sea level rise scenarios have been using global data and scenarios that only depict inundation areas without taking into account socio economic and quality of life. Malaysia is vulnerable to sea level rise particularly areas located on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia facing the South China Sea where the waves are larger, especially during the monsoon season. It is also our study site covering over 675 km and fifteen districts located along the coast. To initiate a successful selective breeding program, genetic variation is very important. This study was aimed to aid selective breeding of Anabas testudineus in Malaysia. Thus, morphological and molecular approach was adopted to investigate variation in hatchery stocks. In morphological approach, truss network method was applied to examine phenotypic variation of existing hatchery stocks. Cytochrome b gene was selected as a molecular marker to investigate the current status of genetic variation in hatchery stock. Growth performance of hatchery strain was conducted to evaluate performance of existing hatchery stock.Item Nesting biology of the horseshoe crab, tachypleus gigas (muller, 1785) in relation to changing environmental settings at pantai Balok and Tanjung Selangor, Pahang(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-04) Bryan Raveen NelsonDespite the presence of Tachypleus gigas, T. tridentatus and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda in Malaysian waters for ages, the available scientific literature on their population dynamics, breeding biology and nesting behaviour still remains limited. This includes the documentation at their breeding grounds, Pantai Balok and Tanjung Selangor, present on east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Long-term investigations were carried out at both places in two Phases, 1 (2009-2010) and 2 (2010-2011). However an additional, Phase-3 (2012-2013), was only included for Pantai Balok.Item Age, growth and reproductive biology of Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier, 1817) off the western waters of Aceh(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-05) Muhammad ArrafiA study of Age, Growth and Reproductive Biology of Indian Mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier, 1817) Off The Western Waters of Aceh, Indonesia was carried out from January to December 2013 at Ujong Baroh fishing port. A total of 1343 Indian mackerels (mainly from fishing vessel that used danish seine) were collected randomly twice a month. This study was conducted not only to determine the growth and age parameters using length frequency data, but also to investigate the biological aspects of the indian mackerel species, i.e. length-weight relationship, condition factor, sex ratio, gonad maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), length at first maturity and fecundity.Item Kajian biologi pembiakan kelah (Tor tambra) di Sungai Meureubo, Aceh Barat, Indonesia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-05) Baihaqi MahmudMatlamat di dalam ini penyelidikan secara umum adalah untuk mendapatkan maklumat biologi pembiakan ikan masheer (Tor tambra) dalam Sungai Meureubo, subdaerah Pante Ceureumen, di daerah Aceh Barat, Indonesia. Populasi ikan kelah di Aceh Barat telah menurun dengan ketara disebabkan oleh pencemaran alam sekitar dan aktiviti menangkap berterusan.Item The effects of polyunsaturated fatty acid enrichment on acute heat and light-realated stress tolerance of the scleractinian coral, Galaxea fascicularis Linnaeus 1767(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-06) Lim Chuin SiewThis study was conducted to evaluate the assimilation of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) of a scleractinian coral, Galaxea fascicularis in enrichment. After that, the trend of PUFA accumulation in corals was determined by optimum time of PUFA enrichment. This study had also investigated the survival rate of starved and PUFA-enriched G. fascicularis in stress and the effects of different types of stressors on the PUFA composition of the corals. Lastly, the effects of different treatments on the coral’s PUFA recovery rate after a stress event were also examined. Previous studies on coral’s PUFAs are mainly concentrated during the actual stress event rather than the post-stress recovery period. The roles of PUFAs in coral stress studies remained unclear. In this study, two main components in the corals were examined: 1) the PUFA accumulation trend; and 2) the effects of heat and high light intensity stress. Firstly, the corals were fed with non-enriched and PUFA-enriched Artemia with starved corals as control for the durations of 1 week, 2 weeks, 5 weeks and 10 weeks.Item Effects of dietary probiotics and temperatures stress on growth and immunity related genes expression in Malaysian Mahseer (Tor Tambroides)(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-09) Nguyen Thi MaiTor tambroides is an important cyprinid group with high commercial and aesthetic value as food and ornamental fish. However, overharvesting and habitat degradation have caused the decline of wild Tor tambroides population.Item Gynogenesis application in banana shrimp, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis (de man, 1888) through in-vitro fertilization(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-10) Noor Hidayati Abu BakarThis research was conducted to discover gynogenesis application in banana shrimp, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis aided with In-Vitro Fertilization technique (IVF). Gynogenesis is the most suitable method to be applied in penaeid shrimp monosex production since the sperm are easily maintained compared to eggs, penaeid shrimp exhibit external fertilization, and the larvae produce are fertile.
