Item Synthesis, characterization and method development studies of a molecularly imprinted polymer for the extraction of 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013) Norhafiza Ilyana YatimA novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized to be used as a highly selective and specific sorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE) of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). TNT-MIP was prepared by using 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) as template, methacrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linker using the non-covalent approach. Nonimprinted polymer (NIP) was prepared under the similar approach but in the absence of a template as a reference for evaluating the performance of MIP. The resulting polymer monoliths were ground and sieved to obtain sizes in the range of 25-38 μm and incorporated as SPE sorbent. Their extraction performance were analysed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with UV detector at 254 nm.Item Synthesis, characterization and catalytic studies of titania photocatalyst for degradation of selected dyes in textile indutrial wastewater(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-09) Bedurus, Edmand AndrewIn this study, the optimum condition of Microwave Assisted Synthesis (MAS) method, in terms of its temperature and heating time setting were verified by evaluating the photocatalytic performance of the MAS prepared titania towards Rhodamine B and Reactive Golden Yellow R dyes.Item Community Structures And Behavioural Ecology Of Indo – Pacific Humpback Dolphins (Sousa Chinensis) In Cowie Bay, Sabah, Malaysia(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014) Hairul Masrini Binti MuhamadLittle is known about the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins that inhabit Cowie Bay, Sabah. Therefore, this project is expected to provide scientific information on Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin„s group size, social structure and residence patterns in Cowie Bay, Sabah. Boat based surveys were conducted from April 2008 to March 2009 to evaluate the status of humpback dolphins using two methods; Peterson capture-recapture method (using photo identification) and direct count method. Data were analysed using statistical software and Microsoft Photo Manager. Results showed that the humpback dolphin‟s community was small. Only three individuals were identified and catalogued living in the bay within 1.8 – 25 meters depth of water. The sighting rate was higher during neap tides than during spring tides. However, the group size (Mean = 2.49) was not affected by the different types of tides (U = 250.5, p > 0.05, r = -0.12). The association indices between individuals suggested that the community is highly associated with each other (AI = 0.6373 / 0.5756 / 0.6728).Item Sandbar Regulated Hydrodynamic Influences On Hydrochemistry Of Mengabang Telipot Estuary, Peninsular Malaysia(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-02) Koh Mei KeeInfluences of river and groundwater hydrodynamic behaviours (water level, flow velocity and flow rate) on hydrochemistry (salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) saturations and dissolved phosphate (DP)) were evaluated through high spatial and temporal resolution study at sandbar-regulated Mengabang Telipot estuary. River and groundwater levels were measured using stick gauge and pressure transducer sensor. River flow velocity was measured using Valeport flow meter. River flow rate was calculated from stage-area curve. River and groundwater were sampled sub-daily at high tide and low tide. Salinity, pH and DO were measured in-situ using YSI Multi-parameter probe. DP was determined using ascorbic acid method. River hydrodynamic during sandbar closed event was characterized by minor dependency on tidal fluctuations, gradual increase of water level, continual low flow velocity and flow rate. These hydrodynamic behaviours established a hydrochemistry equilibrium, in which water properties generally were characterized by virtual absence of horizontal gradients while vertical stratifications were significant. In addition, the river was in high trophic status as algae blooms were visible. Conversely, river hydrodynamic in sandbar opened event was tidal-controlled and showed higher flow velocity. Horizontal gradients of water properties became significant while vertically more homogenised and with lower trophic status. Groundwater hydrodynamic during sandbar closed event was less controlled by tides and the water level gradually increased through time. On the contrary, groundwater level during sandbar opened event was tide controlled.Item Distribution and fluxes of chlorophyll-a and dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus from Terengganu river estuary to South China Sea(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-02) Suryani SulongThis study is to determine the distribution, flux and relationship of dissolved nitrogen, dissolved phosphorus and chlorophyll-a (productivity), that are then used to develop the dissolved nitrogen, dissolved phosphorus and productivity (chlorophyll-a) fluxes model in the Terengganu River Estuary using the Land-ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zones (LOICZ) Biogeochemical Modelling Guidelines. Dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus and chlorophyll-a water samples were collected from 16 sampling stations in the rivers (Terengganu River and Nerus River), estuary and coastal water during the Northeast, Southwest and Inter-monsoon seasons as well as during low and high tides from January to November 2010.Item Gene expression study on cadmium stress in Chlorella vulgaris (UMT-M1) by using mRna differential display polymerase chain reaction (dd-pcr)(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-03) Chew, Eng HowCadmium is a non-essential metal which is toxic to all organisms and was classified as carcinogen by several agencies. This study utilizes Chlorella vulgaris (UMT-M1) as a model to study cadmium induced stress in cells. C. vulgaris were exposed to 0.26 mg/L and 2.6 mg/L of cadmium and a total of nine cadmium-inducible genes were identified using differential display polymerase chain reaction (DD-PCR). The sizes of isolated DNA fragments ranged from 242 to 1009 bp which was grouped into three categories based on their function.Item The effect of plant hormones on oil accumulation, fatty acid composiitons and expression levels of fatty acid biosynthetic genes in the marine mircoalga, chlorella vulgaris(Terengganu: Univsrsiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-05) Malina JusohMicroalgae lipids and oils are potential candidates for renewable-biofuels and nutritional purposes. In –situ CTD parameters of temperature, salinity, density and dissolved oxygen were selected to explain the water characteristics while in-situ ADCP data was used to measure currents at the study area. In –situ CTD parameters of temperature, salinity, density and dissolved oxygen were selected to explain the water characteristics while in-situ ADCP data was used to measure currents at the study area. Because of some limitations in this in-situ data to explain the seasonal variations, satellite tracked drifter data of SVP and assimilated model outputs of BRAN were added to this study. According to the moored ADCP result that was deployed for about 17 hours at the offshore area, the currents behaviour was prominently influenced by diurnal cycles, which is tides. The effect of tides to the currents here were more prominent in the meridional current (v-component) compared to zonal current (u-component). At the same time, the currents also are changing seasonally as observed from SVP and BRAN model outputs. However, CTD data that was taken every two hours within the mooring period did not show any significant diurnal variability in the water properties. The vertical profiles of the snapshots data that were taken in different months also did not show any diurnal changes. The different in vertical profiles was more obvious in between months. BRAN‟s model outputs of temperature and salinity also confirmed that the study area had a prominent seasonal variability of water properties.Item Manglicolous fungi diversity in east coast of Penisular Malaysia(Terengganu: Univsrsiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-06) Hazarina AliThis study reports on the biodiversity of manglicolous fungi on driftwoods collected from mangrove areas in Bakau Tinggi Recreational Forest, Pulau Sekeping and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu in Terengganu and Cherating in Pahang, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 530 wood samples were collected and incubated separately. Observations were done once every fortnightly for up to six months. From the collections, a total of 55 manglicolous fungi comprising of 39 Ascomycetes, two Basidiomycetes and 14 anamorphic taxa were identified and recorded. The highest number of fungi were recorded from mangrove areas of Bakau Tinggi (26 species) followed by Pulau Sekeping (16 species), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (14 species) and Cherating (12 species).Item The Application Of Two Dimensional Nearshore Spectral Waves (2d-Nsw) Model For Wave Prediction And Wave Power Potential Along Terengganu Coastline(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-06) Nur Amalina Binti Abdul LatiffThis thesis is an investigation of the wave power resource in the Terengganu nearshore area. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the nearshore spectra wave model and hence used the simulated result to assess the wave power potential. The MIKE-21 Neashore Spectral Wave (MIKE-21 NSW) model has the potential of serving as a tool for obtaining accurate estimates of wave field condition along the Terengganu nearshore area. Generally, the transformation of the offshore wave field, as it propagates into this area, is computed by using hindcast input wave data from the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast‗s (ECMWF) (70 m water depth), as a boundary data. The accuracy of the modelled output was investigated by directly comparing it to the available Acoustic Wave and Current (AWAC) observation wave data (16 m water depth) during the overlapping recording period.Item Ship collision and grounding performances(United Kingdom: Newcastle University, 2014-12) Anuar bin Abu BakarThis present thesis investigates the accidental load of ship collision and grounding performances. The main tasks comprise the rupture prediction, validation of material failure, ship grounding analysis and ship collision analysis.Item A Study on clay minerals and major element oxides in surface riverine estuarine sediments from selected from selected rivers of Terengganu, Malaysia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Lina Idayu AbdullahThe clay mineralogy deposition and major oxide elements distribution of the surface estuarine sediments from the selected estuaries of Terengganu was studied in order to know the types of clay minerals and the source of sediments. A total of 68 sampling stations were collected from the estuaries of Terengganu River, Kemaman River, Dungun River and Besut River. The sediments were examined using X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope with Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) methods for the clay minerals present and major oxides composition.Item Characterization of p(3hb-co-4hb) copolymer synthesis consisting of high 4hb monomer using cupriavidus sp. usmaa1020 transformant strains(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Muhammad Syafiq bin IshakPolyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are naturally-occurring biodegradable thermopolyesters accumulated by bacteria. Copolyester of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] were noted for its high biocompatibility. This makes it an excellent candidate for medical as well as biopharmaceutical applications. A Gram-negative bacteria, Cupriavidus sp. USMAA1020 has the ability to synthesized P(3HB-co-4HB) copolymer with various 4HB monomer compositions.Item Thermal frontal zone and associated coastal upwelling along the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Kok, Poh HengThe main aim of this study is to investigate the thermal fronts and coastal upwelling along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia (ECPM). In view of that, monthly sea surface temperature (SST) climatology data were used to achieve this goal. The factors responsible for the formation of thermal fronts and coastal upwelling were determined. In addition to SST, chlorophyll-a concentration, sea surface height (SSH) and marine fish landing data were used to examine the implications of coastal upwelling on the marine environments.Item Distribution of water physico-chemical parameters and biogenic elements in Setiu lagoon during monsoon events as indicator for primary productivity(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Aida Royyani binti Abd AriffThe study was conducted in the Setiu Lagoon, Terengganu involving three sampling periods, namely in May 2007 (post-monsoon), September 2007 (pre-monsoon) and January 2008 (monsoon). Samples of nutrients (NO3--N, NO2--N, NH4+-N, PO4-3-P), primary productivity, chlorophyll-a and physico-chemical parameters of water were collected during low and high tides from 6 stations in the lagoon area and 6 stations in the riverine area except for primary productivity where samples were taken during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons only during high tide. Data obtained were analyzed to assess the variations of water quality within Setiu lagoon spatially and temporally subjected to monsoonal events and tidal changes. From the results, the N:P ratio indicated that the study area was mostly N limited especially in the lagoon area. Correlation analysis indicated that phytoplankton consumed more NO3--N during low tide in the post-monsoon (p<0.01) and pre-monsoon season (p<0.05) but during high tide.Item Effects of elevated tropospheric ozone on biochemical activities and yield of selected indica rice plants(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015) Azrin binti SurotoOzone had been recognized as one of the major threats towards crops, including rice by giving the adverse effects on biochemical activities, physiological performance and yield production. In Malaysia, anthropogenic sources are rapidly increasing and this condition had caused increased ozone formation. Domestic rice consumption is projected to be high due to population increase. High production of rice is targeted from the existing rice planting areas. Since there is no plan by the government to increase the area for rice cultivation, there is an urgent need to identify the most tolerant cultivar to ozone.Item Studies on the polysaccharide-producing bacteria, shewanella putref aciens isolated from marine sponge, theonella sp.(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-03) Lukman Hakim bin Mohd DinMarine sponge, Theonella sp. is found in great quantity from Malaysian’s ocean. Theonella sp. are one of marine sponges that produces a significant bioactive compounds. They are stated to be potential drug lead producers having exceptional structures that are unavailable from terrestrial region.Item Studies of the malayan pangolin (manis javanica desmarest) from Peninsular Malaysia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-05) Muhammad Hafiz bin SulaimanMalayan Pangolin (ManisjavanicaDesmarest) is threatened by illegal hunting and habitat loss. Conservation efforts are difficult due to lack of information in various aspects. As such, this study was conducted to collect information which could help in the Malayan Pangolin conservation.
