Item Removal of malathion using selected granular activated carbons(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-09) Hajjar Hartini Wan JusohThe usage of malathion pesticide and a subsequent release into the environment was a major concern worldwide due to detrimental effect and their toxicity to ecosystem. Some studies showed that granular activated carbon (GAC)becomes the most effective adsorbents for the removal of pesticides. Therefore, a study was carried out to investigate the potential and effectiveness of four different types of granular activated carbon (GAC) namely coal base, coconut shell, palm shell and peat base to remove pesticides particularly malathion.Item Wind energy assessment for selected sites in Malaysia and the proposed feed-in-tariff rates(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-11) Aliashim AlbaniWind energy is still not recognized as eligible energy resource in Malaysian Renewable Energy Act 2011. There are only four technologies applicable for Feedin-Tariff (FiT) which are biomass, biogas, solar and small hydro. Thus, there is no Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) for the wind projects in Malaysia. This thesis presents the identification of Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) based on the Annual Energy Production (AEP) at every selected site: Kuala Terengganu, Mersing, Kudat and Langkawi Island. WindPRO and WAsP software are used for the energy simulation. The wind data are obtained from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD) stations. The Pitch 22 kW wind turbine was selected for energy simulation due to its best capacity factor compared to the other type of wind turbines. Forty six different installed capacity wind farm in range 22 kW till 1.012 MW were simulated based on the 22 kW wind turbine, sites roughness condition and sites wind resources. The Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) is identified by Net Present Value (NPV) analysis, Payback Period (PBP) analysis and degression rate analysis. The result found that the proposed FiT rates are based on the value of NPV is 98.6% from the investment cost with payback period is 10 years. The best degression rate is 5% for every year.Item Developmenet of prediction system for nanofiltration of binary salt solutions(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-12) Norhaslinda Mohd SidekItem Properties of chemically modified alpinia galanga filled hdpe composites(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-05) Rohani MustaphaIn recent years, many studies have focused on the idea of using natural fibers from renewable resources as alternative to replace traditional synthetic fibers in polymer composite systems. This is due to the increased ecological concern and environmental awareness. In this study, the effect of untreated and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APE) as well as p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) treated Alpiniagalanga (AG) agricultural residue-HDPE composites with and without addition of maleic anhydride-graft-polyethylene (MAPE) and eco degradant (ECO) were studied. The composites were prepared by melt blending HDPE resin with various AG fiber loadings (3, 6, 10 and 15 wt%) by using a BrabenderPlastograph EC mixer at 135°C at 50 rpm. The composites were characterized based on tensile properties, morphology, thermal properties and water absorption. The finding reveals that AG fibers generally reinforced AG/HDPE composites with increasing AG fiber loadings. Four formulations of AG/HDPE show a significant improvement in tensile strength. Tensile strength of NaOH and 3-APE treated AG fibers/HDPE composites with an addition of ECO (AG/HDPE+ECO) is 34.7 MPa, which is 24.9 % higher than that of pristine HDPE (27.8 MPa). The addition of AG fibers improved the Young’s modulus of AG/HDPE composites with addition of ECO up to 4874.2 MPa as compared to HDPE (1012.7 MPa). However, the elongation at break of AG/HDPE is generally lowered with the inclusion of AG fibers. The treatment of AG fibers with NaOH and 3-APE and inclusion of ECO resulted in 0.4 % water absorption than that of HDPE(0.1%). The presence of treated AG fibersshowed higher the thermal stability of AG/HDPE composites compared to untreated AG/HDPE composites. Thetensile fracture surfaced morphology of AG/HDPE composites and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) analysis of untreated and treated AG/HDPE composites with and without addition of ECO and MAPE support the above analysis.Item A combination of zinc oxide, poly (3-Thiophenyl Acetic Acid) and dynes as hybrid polymer tandem solar cells(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2014-07) Wan Almaz Dhafina Che Wan AhmadNowadays, earth is facing the depletion of energy resources such as petroleum, natural gas and coal. In large quantities, the SS can alter the ecosystem of the area by limiting the level of light penetration into the deeper seabed. Recently, a number of algorithms have been developed to distinguish SS influenced area and clear water regions in coastal water areas but these algorithms require complicated computational analyses. Thus, a simple method is needed to accurately detect the presence of SS temporally and spatially needs to be developed. This study was conducted to detect the region that affected by SS along coastal line and estuaries by using remote sensing technique. In order to detect the region that affected by the SS on a daily basis, a simple algorithm that based on empirical technique was developed. The algorithm is based on the difference in the slope of the line connecting the wavelength of 0.47 µm to 1.24 µm and the line connecting 0.47 µm to 0.66 µm.Item Study on the characteristics of capillary plasma antenna array in radio wave(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-05) Noor Fadhilah RamliRecently the new type of plasma antenna shows explosive increment in the antenna development which demands the new elements, the new designs and wide band of resonance frequency in microwave range.
