Item A modification of polystyrene supported palladium(II) complex as effective catalyst for Mizoroki‐Heck reaction(Journal of Scientific Research and Development, 2016) Siti Kamilah Che Soh; Siti Aminah Jusoh; Mohd Sukeri Mohd Yusof; Wan M. KhairulChloromethylated polystyrene cross-linked with 5% divinylbenzene (PS5) has been successfully functionalized with phenyldithiocarbazate ligand (PS5-PDC). The polymer was used as solid support for anchoring the palladium metal (PS5-PDC-Pd). The properties of dark colored polymer, impregnated with palladium complex was then characterized by various spectroscopic and analytical techniques namely Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), elemental chemical analysis CHNS, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), BET surface area, powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX). Supported catalyst of PS5-PDC-Pd was then tested in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction of 4-bromoacetophenone with methyl acrylate. The reaction was monitored by GC-FID. Preliminary results showed that supported catalyst could be used in at least three consecutive Mizoroki-Heck reactions with the same catalytic activity.Item Star-shaped Thiourea Derivative as Single Molecule Conductive Thin Film(American Chemical Science Journal, 2016-01) Wan M. KhairulThe electronic delocalization in extended π-orbital system of conjugated organic molecules brings significant contribution and has lead for further investigation to exploit this system to be used as potential conductive thin film. In this work, a star-shaped thiourea, N1,N3,N5-tris(4- (nonyloxy)phenyl)-N’-(benzene-1,3,5 tricarbonyl) thiourea (STU) based on Donor(D)-π-Acceptor(A) system was successfully synthesized from continuous reactions of intermediate compound 4- nonyloxy aniline hydrochloride with benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid chloride prior to form active substrate in the form of film. These compounds were characterized via several spectroscopic and analytical methods namely IR, UV-Vis, CHNS elemental analysis, 1H and 13C NMR as well TGAItem Synthesis and Characterization of New Metal- Organic Framework Derived from 6- (Methoxycarbonyl) Pyridine-2-Carboxylic Acid as Application for Hydrogen Storage Materials(International Journal of Applied Chemistry, 2016) Maisara Abdul Kadir; Nafisah Mansor; Wan M. Khairul; Mohd Sukeri Mohd Yusof; Mohammad IsmailIn this study, a new organic linker namely 6-(pyrimidin-2-ylcarbamoyl)-pyridine-2- carboxylic acid methyl ester (L1) has been successfully synthesized. Along with this discovery, two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) which derived from L1 and 6- (methoxycarbonyl)pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (L), have also been synthesized and characterized by using combination of spectroscopic techniques such as Infrared (IR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonances (NMR), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Xray crystallography.Item Synthesis and Spectroscopic Studies of Alkyl Substituted Thiourea Derivatives Towards the Selected Antibacterial Activities(Educatum JSMT, 2016) Wan M. Khairul; Siti Aishah Suskri; Rafizah Rahamathullah; Noraznawati IsmailIn this study, new members of alkyl substituted thiourea derivatives of (RC( O)NHC(S)NHCH2CH(CH3)NHC(S)NHC(O)-R) in which R represents alkyl group namely isobutyryl and pivaloyl were successfully synthesized for their antibacterial activities. The compounds were spectroscopically and analytically characterized via infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible (UV– vis) spectroscopy, CHNS elemental analysis as well melting point analysis. In turn, they were screened for antibacterial activity using selected bacteria namely, Micrococcus sp., Salmonella typhi, Aeromonas sp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus cereus and also Escherichia coli. From the antibacterial test, all synthesized compounds were found to exhibit great potential results as antibacterial agents, except for 1 which did not show inhibition activity towards Klebsiella pneumoniae. Thus, these proposed molecular structures have given ideal indication to act as antibacterial agents which have utmost potential in pharmaceutical and medical industries in the near future.Item Synthesis, Spectroscopic Studies, and Biological Activities of Acylthiourea Derivatives as Potential Anti-Bacteria Agents(Educatum JSMT, 2016) Wan M. Khairul; Aziah Ahmad Ariffin; Noraznawati Ismail; Adibah Izzati DaudThiourea is known to be a unique class of organic compounds especially acylthiourea since they consist excellent Hbonds donor and acceptor where it has strong ability to form metal complexation with various metal salts. Therefore, six members of acylthiourea derivatives (TH1-TH6) have been successfully synthesized and characterised using selected spectroscopic and analytical methods namely Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometer, and CHNS elemental analysis. In turn, all the synthesised TH1-TH6 were used to investigate the anti-bacterial activity towards selected bacteria of both Gram-negative and positive namely Salmonella typhi and Bacillus cereus respectively. TH1-TH6 revealed to have good activity towards S. typhi and B. cereus with specific and broad-range spectrum activity.Item Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of Pyridylthiourea Derivatives As Ionophores For Cu(ii) Ion Detection(Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences, 2015-12) Wan M. Khairul; Mohd Faizuddin Abu Hasan; Adibah Izzati Daud; Hafiza Mohamed Zuki; Ku Halim Ku bulat; Maisara Abdul KadirCopper (II) ion chemical sensors based on pyridine-thiourea derivatives; N-pyridyl-N’-(biphenyl-4-carbonyl)thiourea (L1), and N-pyridyl-N’-(3,5-dimethyoxybenzoyl)thiourea (L2) were synthesised, characterised, and studied as ionophores in the form of thin-films PVC membranes.
