Item Study on imigration of commercially important penaeid shrimp postlarvae in the estuarine area of Chakaria, Cox's Bazar Bangladesh(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 1990) Mahmood, NuruddinPresent study was carried out in the Mathamuhuri estuary, located in the mangrove ecosystem of the Chakaria Sundarbans, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh for a period of two years between May 1982 and April 1984. The over all objective was to draw attention to the fishery significance of the estuaries and the mangrove ecosystems of Bangladesh based on practical observations on (i) seasonal immigration of postlarvae of four commercially important penaeid shrimps Penaeus(P.)monodon, P.(F.)indicus, Metapenaeus monoceros and M. brevicornis in the study area at the vicinity of shrimp culture farms, (ii) quantitative distribution (density) of penaeid postlarvae in general, their diel and monthly variation in occurrence; and (iii) variation of some physicochemical parameters in relation to biological investigations.Item Studies on the life history and aquaculture of the Mullet, Liza haematocheila distributed in the ariake sound(Japan: Nagasaki University, 1992) Anuar, HassanCruoricola lates N. Gen., N. Sp. from the blood vessels of cultured sea bass (Lates calcarifer Bloch 1790) is described. It is a lanceolate sanguinicolid with a single column of submarginal, ventral spines; extensive vitellarium; and X-shaped intestine. The single, lobed testis extends laterally to the caeca. The cirrus lies dorsal to the spherical seminal vesicle. Auxiliary seminal vesicle present. The uterus is post-ovarian, partly situated between the lobes of the ovary; mid-portion is thick. Cruoricola lates N. Gen., N. Sp. is found in all sea bass over 15g weight in the type locality, Pulau Ketam.Item The conservation-related biology and ecology of the leatherback turtle, dermochelys corilacea in Rantau Abang, Terengganu, Malaysia(Kagoshima University, 1993) Chan, Eng HengThis dissertation provides an analysis of the temporal and spatial trends exhibited in the Malaysian leatherback nesting population in Terengganu, addresses the most serious threats to the survival of the population, and through conservation-oriented research, formulates measures to counteract the declining trend observed in the population. Conservation measures which have been formulated and proposed have been translated into action by the appropriate federal and state agencies responsible for the conservation and management of sea turtles.Item Digestive tract and enzymes development in early life stages of marble goby (Oxyeleotris marmoratus Bleeker)(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2005-09) Van, Mai VietA study on the development of the digestive system of marble goby (Oxyeleotris marmoratus) larvae was conducted from hatching until 35 days after hatching (DAH) by histological and histochemical techniques. At hatching, the digestive system appear as a straight undifferentiated tube, with a small lumen and the mouth and anus still not open. During the endogenous feeding phase (0-3 DAH), yolk was absorption while the gut differentiated into a buccal cavity, oesophagus and intestine. The liver appeared as compact basophilic tissue and situated between the yolk sac and the developing gut without any vacuoles. The epithelium of the intestine started to fold on 2 DAH. The rectum was separated from the anterior intestine by the ileorectal valve. Lipid vacuoles were observed in the rectum on 3 DAH and in small intestine on 7 DAH. At onset of exogenous feeding (4-5 DAH), the digestive tract was divided into 5 parts: buccopharynx, oesophagus, stomach, intestine and rectum.Item Morphometrics, meristics and molecular genetics of snakehead fish in Malaysia(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2006-09) Tam, Bui MinhMost of the Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, 70% of the protein sources come from fish. Fish and aquatic organisms constitute a major portion of Malaysian diets. The snakehead fishes play an important role among the freshwater food fish species. There are six species of snakehead fish in Malaysia, namely Channa marulioides, C. melasoma, C. lucius, C. gachua, C. micropeltes, and C. striatus. Some aspects of morphology and molecular genetics of these species were conducted in this study. The main objectives of this study were (i) to taxonomy snakehead species of Malaysia based on morphology, (ii) to detect genetic variation among snakehead species in Peninsular Malaysia using RAPD, (iii) to definite the phylogeny of Channidae using mitochondria (iv) to design specific primer (Microsatellite method) for snakehead species.Item Waste excretion of marble goby (Oxyeleotris marmorata bleeker)(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2007-06) Lam, Su ShiungMarble goby (Oxyeleotris marmorata Bleeker), a freshwater food fish with its high demand and price, has a great potential as a profitable commercial aquaculture candidate in Malaysia and Southeast Asia region. With respect to their good prospect, this study was conducted to collect growth and waste excretion data that would be of value for the design and management of a more effective recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) for growout production of this fish due to poor growth performance and disease problems shown by conventional cage and pond culture systems.Item Study on the early development and effects of ammonia on climbing perch (Anabas testudineus, Bloch) larvae(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2007-09) Siang, Ng BengThe early life development and effects of ammonia on the climbing perch Anabas testudineus embryos and larvae were studied. The water bath system was used to maintain water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH ranging from 29.0 - 29.8 °C, 7.4 - 7.8 mg/1, 7.64 - 7.73 during embryonic development and 28.8 - 30.9 °C, 6.8 - 7.5 mg/1 and 7.06 - 7.98 for larval development, respectively. Newly fertilized eggs were spherical with mean diameter of 0.93 ± 0.02 mm. First cleavage occurred 30 min after fertilization. The morula, blastula and gastrula stages occurred at 1:10 hour, 1:32 hour and 3:34 hours, respectively. The embryo stage began seven hours later with development of optic vesicle and pigment action followed by heartbeat and blood circulation. The embryos started to hatch 17 hours after fertilization and were completed within 2 hours. The newly hatched larvae were actively swimming one day after hatching and started exogenous feeding on day 2. A l l the yolk were absorbed 6 days after hatching and during this stage flexion occurred at the caudal fin. On day 8, the dorsal, anal and caudal fins had developed primordial finfold. Nine day old larvae have a compressed oblong body.Item Effect of plant growth regulators and stem cutting sizes on plant height, yeald and fruit quality of dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) growth on bris soil(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2007-09) Nor Shariah, SallehHylocereus polyrhizus (dragon fruits) originate from North, Central and South America and are cactus in nature. This plant is a desert plant and highly adaptable to a new environment. However, there were no scientific reports on adaptation of this crop to bris soil. Therefore, this study was carried out to establish the H. polyrhizus on undeveloped bris soil at the Department of Agriculture, Rhu Tapai, Terengganu. In Terengganu, there are about 15,000 acres of undeveloped land and most of them are the bris soil. The primary study on the effect of synthetic hormone auxin, IBA (Indole-3-butyric Acid) on the cuttings of H. polyrhizus was carried out in the greenhouse of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). The aim of the study was to determine the effect of IBA and stem cutting sizes on rooting of H. polyrhizus. The cuttings of H. polyrhizus; 5 cm (2 inches), 10 cm (4 inches), 15 cm (6 inches) and 30 cm (12 inches) in length were soaked in IBA solutions at 0, 300, 500, 750 and 1000 ppm.Item Crossbreeding of Pangasius hypophtalmus and Pangasius nasutus and digestive system development of the hybrid larvae(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2008-04) Agus Putra, Abdul SamadA study to determine the feasibility of producing hybrid of Pangasius spp through crossbreeding between Pangasius hypophthalmus and Pangasius nasutus were conducted from June to August 2007. The result of the crossbreeding between P. hypophthalmus female and P. nasutus male (HN) showed a good breeding performance, where the average fertilization, hatching and deformation rates were 81.17%, 83.06% and 8.51%, respectively. However, crossbreeding between P. nasutus female and P. hypophthalmus male (NH) resulted in low breeding performance with the average fertilization, hatching and deformation rates at 60.96%, 54.61% and 14.68%, respectively. For the control, P. hypophthalmus (HH), the average fertilization, hatching and deformation rates were 93.18%, 89.73% and 4.14%, respectively; and for P. nasutus (NN), the average fertilization, hatching and deformation rates were 76.83%, 68.26% and 7.16%, respectively. Larval rearing up to 6 weeks after hatching (6 wAH), showed that survival rate of HN was intermediate of both the parental species, with an average value of 73.33%, while, NH showed a lower survival rate with an average of 43.67%.Item Breeding performance and traits inheritance of hybrid catfish, Clarias macrocephalus and Clarias gariepinus(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2008-09) Pham, Thanh LiemInterspecific hybridization between Clarias macrocephalus (CM) and Clarias gariepinus (CG) has been conducted to produce hybrid with specific desirable traits. To evaluate its potential application in aquaculture, fertility and performance of desirable traits (e.g. growth, external morphology, flesh quality, disease resistance) were examined on reciprocal Fi and backcross hybrids. Reciprocal hybrids were partially fertile with various abnormalities in gonad development that resulted in low gamete production. Abnormalities observed in gonad development of all hybrid genotypes included a single ovary or testis, tumor-like and adipose-like tissues in ovaries, ovotestis, and retarded gonad. Reciprocal hybrid males had problems with spermatogenesis that was likely due to genetic incompatibility since treatment with hormones did not improve spermatogenesis.Item Spawning behaviour and chemical communication of tropical donkey's-ear abalone (haliotis asinina linnaeus 1758)(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2009-11) Hua Thai NhanThis study aims to reveal spawning behaviors and chemical communication of the tropical donkey's ear abalone, Haliotis asinina Linnaeus 1758. H. asinina is a broadcast spawner, they would aggregate before the mass-spawning. Chemical communication plays an important role in the spawning of this mollusc. Results showed that sexually matured females H. asinina were strongly attracted to the matured males abalone.Item Sexual dimorphism, gonad structure and genetic differences of pink skunk clownfish (Amphiprion perideraion)(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2010-01) QL 638 .P77 S3 2010Pink Skunk Clownfish, Amphiprion perideraion, is known as protandric hermaphrodite where it can change its sex from male to female. In order to breed clownfishes in captivity, they need to be paired which means the ability to identify the fish sex is crucial. The social structure of the false clownfish typically consists of a pair of functional brooders within a population of individuals which remain as protandrous hermaphrodites usually incapable of breeding. The Nemipterus peronii, L., or 'kerisi', has high commercial value in Malaysia fish market. Analysis on landing trends of Nemipterids in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia shows that almost 50% of this group is N. peronii.Item Study on the masculinization of false clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) using 17 a-methyltestosterone(Institut Akuakultur Tropika, 2010-01) Muhammad Abduh YazedFalse clownfish {Amphiprion ocellaris) is the most common marine ornamental species that is popular among hobbyist. However, the production of this species in captivity is still low. Most of the broodstocks are wild-caught and the F1 generations failed to breed in captivity. Hormone treatment has been used widely to produce monosex population in fish species. The main objective of this project is to determine if hormone can be used to masculinize this fish. Therefore, in order to achieve this objective, several studies were conducted to study the effects of: (i) immersion and oral administration of 17 a-methyltestosterone in producing male fish, (ii) pairing and non-pairing of 17 a-methyltestosterone treated fish on gonad structure of A. ocellaris.Item Study on the morphology and digestive system development in early life stages of kelah , Tor tambroides (bleeker, 1854)(2010-04) Endryeni M.A study on external morphology and digestive system development of Tor tambroides were conducted at Institute of Tropical Aquaculture of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu from newly hatched larvae until 45 day after hatching (DAH) by morphological measurement and histological technique. This study is to provide information for the best rearing management based on the development and behaviour of this fish.
