Item Deviations of nutrient digestibility of Johnsongrass hay rations as influenced by phenothiazine and feces drying process(Mississippi State University, 1973-05) Mohamed MahyuddinFeed efficiency and d a 1 y weight gain of livestock has improved tremendously in the last 50 years This may be attributed to better management practices, improved rations, improved breeding programs and through the introduction of synthetic hormones and drugs. Today, more meat is being produced on less feed than ever before. The present livestock industry is based largely on feeds that can also be used directly by humans and is thus in direct competition with the human population. In the face of an ever growing world food crisis, it is imperative that we explore every possible means of increasing our food supplies and utilizing them more efficiently. Item Effects of feeding system, slaughter weight and sex lamb carcass characteristics, palatability, histology and fatty acid composition(University of Kentucky, 1976) Mohamed MahyuddinTwo experiments involving 154 crossbred lambs were undertaken to study the effects of postweaning feeding regime, slaughter weight and sex on carcass characteristics, palatability of meat as well as histology and fatty acid composition of longissimus muscle and adipose tissue. Thirty-six wethers and 36 ewes (Experiment 1) and 41 wethers and 41 rams (Experiment 2), were weaned at 18 kg and grazed on bluegrass pasture until they reached 31.8 kg at which time 4 (Experiment 1) or 5 (Experiment 2) lambs of each sex were slaughtered. The remaining lambs were randomly assigned (equal; sex distribution) to drylot (13 or 16% crude protein) or pasture (with or without creep) . In Experiment 2, the drylot 16% crude protein treatment was omitted. The lambs were slaughtered at their predesignated slaughter weights (41 or 50 kg), chilled at 3C for 48 hours, graded and carcass data obtained.Item Income distribution across ethnic groups in Malaysia(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 1979-08) M. Yusof SaariItem The Echo Sounder simulator unit based on microcomputer systems(University of Hull, 1981-09) Mohamad Isa MansorThe aim of the project is to study the possibility of using a microcomputer system to implement an echo sounder simulation. The design flexibility of the microprocessor software enables the development of a simulation program necessary to produce an echo signal suitable for a conventional echo sounder. An optional colour display is provided to give a simultaneous recording of the targets. The colour display is generated on a colour t.v. with a colour display generator capable of providing up to seven colours to represent the varying echo intensity. Also a demonstration of mid-water trawling manoeuvre is provided on the colour display.Item Heavy metal toxicity to rainbow trout, Salmo Gairdneri Richardson, during early development(Fakulti Sains dan Teknologi, 1983) Noor Azhar, Mohamed ShaziliThe toxicity of cadmium, copper and zinc to rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, during early development was investigated. In addition the synthesis of cadmium-binding protein by the perfused rainbow trout liver was studied. It was concluded that; 1) Cadmium is extremely toxic to rainbow trout during early development. A continuous cadmium exposure during embryonic development resulted in almost complete mortality of eggs at 1.0 mgCdl *. Some sublethal effects were also observed in hatched alevins. 2) Embryonic sensitivity was not uniform throughout egg development. The fertilisation process was particularly sensitive to cadmium viexe, exposure. Reductions in the fertilisation of eggs was obtained as a result of exposure to 1.0 mgCdl * and higher. The results also indicated that the period of axiation was sensitive to cadmium exposure as shown by a high mortality rate of eggs in continuous exposure tests. 3) Embryonic sensitivity to cadmium and zinc differed from sensitivity to copper indicating possible differences in toxic actions between these metals. 4) The toxicity of mixtures of cadmium, copper and zinc indicated that the toxicity of these metals to trout eggs and fry could be assessed by the additive toxic unit method to give the total toxicity of the mixture. However sublethal effects and metal uptake studies showed possible departures from additive joint action. 5) Post exposure mortalities may result from brief exposure of fish to cadmium even after restoration to clean water. These results highlight the inadequacy of a standard toxicity test in predicting the consequences of brief exposure to a pollutant.Item Model experiments on small shrip trawls(Fakulti Pengajian Maritim dan Sains Marin, 1983) Zainal Ashirin ShahardinItem Studies on flatfish larvae in the shelf waters of the centre great barrier reef Australia(University of North Queensland, 1983-02) Hock, Chack LiewOver 14 000 flatfish larvae were col1ected from the shelf waters of the Central Great Barrier Reef, Australia, during August l'J'78 to December 1981, from which 11 types (Fam. As a contribution to provide a basis to ensure its sound development and management, an 18 month field study was conducted. This thesis presents (a) the general description of the limnological and other ecological properties of Paya Bungor, (b) the analysis of the fish populations including species composition, abundance, distribution patterns, community structure and the population dynamics of the major species, and (c) proposals for the management of Paya Bungor with emphasis on recreational fisheries.Item Least-cost formulation of feeds for prawns, with particular references to macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man)(Fakulti Pengajian Maritim dan Sains Marin, 1985-07) Poh, Yong ThongLinear programming was used in least-cost formulation of feeds for Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The constraints were: crude fat of 5 to 10%, gross energy of 4,400 cal/g, an amino acid profile similar to that of the prawn and specified amounts of crude protein of either 25%, 30%, 40% or 50%. Four pellets, P.25, P.30, P.40, and P.50, were formulated, costing M$0.72, M$0.75, M$0.81 and M$1.04 per kilogram respectively. Chemical analyses indicated that the crude protein, crude fat and gross energy content of the formulated feeds agreed closely with the given constraints. Amino acid analyses showed that the amino acid profiles (with the exception of tryosine, leucine and lysine) of the formulated feeds were remarkably similar to the amino acid profile of the prawn.Item Numerical modelling of coastal water movements(University College of Swansea, 1986-11) Mohd Nasir SaadonThe shallow water equations have been solved numerically using the Galerkin finite element method. The fish is a bottom feeder and fed extensively on a wide range of food items that include teleosts, crustaceans, benthic invertebrates and detrital materials. The relative gut index has been found to vary from the lowest 0.783 to the highest 1.07 in a size range of 8.2 to 67.0 cm.Item The ultrastructural localization of trace metals in the littorina littorea (L) (Gastropod:Prosobranchiata) collected from the tees estuary(UK: University of Newcastle, 1988) Mazlan Abd. GhaffarThe ultrastructural organisation of the cytoplasmic granules in the stomach epithelium and ctenidium cel of Littorina littorea (L) is described. Tissues were compared from animals collected from polluted (Tees estuary) and clean sites (Cullercoats bay). The majority of granules are usually compartmentalised within membrane delineated vesicles. X-ray elemental microanalysis of these granules is also described. It has been shown that granules in the stomach epithelium have ligands which facilitate the binding of iron while ctenidium epithelial cells have ligands (possibly sulphur) responsible for binding copper.Item Digestibility of ingredients in two pelleted diets by macrobrachium rosenbergii (de man)(Fakulti Pengajian Maritim dan Sains Marin, 1988-02) Sian, Kenneth Chin SuiThe digestion coefficients of nutrients in two diets containing 307, and 407. protein were evaluated in the Malaysian giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachlum rosenbergii. Chromic oxide was used as an internal marker for the evaluation of digestibility. Evaluations were carried out with juvenile and adult prawns including female prawns undergoing three different stages of gonad maturation. The results indicate, that the adult prawns were able to digest the nutrients of the ingredients better than'" the juveniles. In the two diets te's't'ed* co pr a c ake , ^whea t flour and soyabean meal we^e better digested than^rish meal and shrimp meal for both juvenile and -adult—prawns. Copra cake was found to be a good source of lipids (71-1007.) , carbohydrate (85-967.) and dry matter ( 72-927.) as well as a good attractant. Carbohydrate, gross energy and dry matter were very well digested in wheat flour with values of 931007., 86-957, and 85-977, respectively. Soyabean meal gave good digestion coefficients for protein (84-997.), lipid (90977.) and carbohydrate (80-1007,). The results indicated that copra cake, wheat flour and soyabean meal are good sources of nutrients for M. rosenbergii. No differences in digestibility was observed for the female prawns with green, yellow and orange gonads. This showed that the stage of gonad maturation has no significant effect on digestibility.Item A study on the biology and status of threadfin bream (family: nemipteridae) with special reference to N. peronii caught in waters off Terengganu coast(Fakulti Pengajian Maritim dan Sains Marin, 1988-05) Mohd Zaki, Mohd SaidIn this study 11 species of threadfin bream, namely Nemipterus mesoprion, N. bathybus, N. tolu, N[._ marginatus, N. delagoe, N. nematophorus, N. hexodon, N. peronii, N. tambuloides, N. nemurus and N. japonicus were identified.
