Efficiency of JSON approach for Data Extraction and Query Retrieval
(Indonesian Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2016-10) Mohd Kamir Yusof; Mustafa Man
Students’ Information System (SIS) in Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) handles thousands of records on the information of students, subject registration, etc. Efficiency of storage and query retrieval of these records is the matter of database management especially involving with huge data. However, the execution time for storing and retrieving these data are still considerably inefficient due to several factors. In this contribution, two database approaches namely Extensible Markup Language (XML) and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) were investigated to evaluate their suitability for handling thousands records in SIS. The results showed JSON is the best choice for storage and query speed. These are essential to cope with the characteristics of students’ data. Whilst, XML and JSON technologies are relatively new to date in comparison to the relational database. Indeed, JSON technology demonstrates greater potential to become a key database technology for handling huge data due to an increase of data annually.

Empirical investigation to explore factors that achieve high quality of mobile learning system based on students’ perspectives
("Engineering Science and Technology, an International Journal", 2016-04-13) Mohammed Amin Almaiah; Masita @ Masila Abdul Jalil; Mustafa Man
This study presents three frameworks for mobile learning system based on quality factors derived from the updated DeLone and McLean information system success model. This study used the questionnaire as a quantitative method to explore quality factors for mobile learning system based on perspectives of 392 students. This study opens future work for using the identified quality factors as guidelines for researchers and designers to design and develop mobile learning applications.

Feature Extraction and Classification for Multiple Species of Gyrodactylus Ectoparasite
(TELKOMNIKA Indonesian Journal of Electrical Engineering, 2015-03-03) Rozniza Ali; Amir Hussain; Mustafa Man
Active Shape Models (ASM) are applied to the attachment hooks of several species of Gyrodactylus, including the notifiable pathogen G. salaris, to assign each species to its true species type. ASM is used as a feature extraction tool to select information from hook images that can be used as input data into trained classifiers. Linear (i.e. LDA and K-NN) and non-linear (i.e. MLP and SVM) models are used to classify Gyrodactylus species. Species of Gyrodactylus, ectoparasitic monogenetic flukes of fish, are difficult to discriminate and identify according to morphology alone and their speciation currently requires taxonomic expertise. The current exercise sets out to confidently classify species, which in this example includes a species which is a notifiable pathogen of Atlantic salmon, to their true class with a high degree of accuracy. The findings from the current exercise demonstrates that import of ASM data into a MLP classifier, outperforms several other methods of classification (i.e. LDA, K-NN and SVM) that were assessed, with an average classification accuracy of 98.72%.

    Fish Length Measurement
(Journal of Advanced Agricultural Technologies, 2016-03) Mustafa Man; Norhaida Abdullah; Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim; Ismail Mat Amin
Fish reproduction, recruitment, growth and mortality normally measured using fish length method for identifying the fish species population. Normally researchers in Malaysia buy the fish and measured length of fish one by one using simple fish measuring board made out of hardwood or acrylic plastic. This current method took longest time and very costly. In this paper, the researcher used different types of digital camera as digital images input data for identifying length of fish and using Hsiu’s Method for analysis. Result of this experiment will be proposed to user in selecting the best camera as input device for measuring length of fish.

Preliminary Study For Exploring The Major Problems And Activities Of Mobile Learning System: A Case Study Of Jordan
(Journal of Theoretical and Applied Information Technology, 2016) Mohammed Amin Almaiah; Masita Abdul Jalil; Mustafa Man
Acceptance of new system or technology has been become a prior step for a successful implementation of any system. Previous studies revealed that the acceptance of mobile learning system among students in Jordan is still very low. Few studies have investigated what the actual challenges influencing acceptance of mobile learning system in Jordanian universities. The current study investigates the main challenges that impede acceptance of mobile learning in Jordanian universities. This study also determines the activities and services of mobile learning system based on potential needs of students. In this study, we employed the questionnaire and interview approaches, targeting students from five universities across Jordan. This paper presents two portions of the findings; qualitative findings identified four main challenges that include the quality of services, availability of learning content, design and technical issues and students' requirements. In contrast, quantitative findings presented the most important services that students would like to perform on mobile learning system.
