    Effect of chitosan coating and packaging on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) for shelflife extension

    Tomato is a climatric fruit that having its ripen process as fast rate if taken away from its tree at ambient temperature. Tomato were treated with 0.5% and 1.0% chitosan coating and were packed with LOPE film. The effectiveness of the treatments was assessed by evaluating their impact on the following parameters: loss of weight, flesh firmness, skin color and soluble solids content. LOPE film were effective in decreasing surface damage and loss of firmness compared to coated and control fruit. LOPE film markedly showed the ripening of tomato as shown by their retention of firmness and delay changes in their skin color. Its also showed the slowing down in weight loss. The tomato packed in LOPE film effective in providing a physical barrier to moisture loss and therefore slowing down the dehydration and fruit shriveling.

    Effect of Palm Oil Mill Sludge Cake on Growth of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) Grown on Bris Soil

    The roselle variety UKMR-2 was used in this study to determine the effect of palm oil mill sludge cake on growth of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) grown on Bris Soil. The roselle was planted in the field into polyethylene bags filled with Bris soil and POMSC at different rates as treatment. The palm oil mill sludge cake (POMSC) was applied at the following rates of 0 (treated as control), 10, 20, 30 and 40 t/ha rates and chicken manure at 20 t/ha was given as the standard treatment and then left for two weeks to allow for mineralization before sowing. Two-week-old seedlings were used as the planting materials.

    The effects of palm oil mill sludge cake (POMSC) as soil ameliorant on growth performance and postharvest quality of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) grown on bris soil

    Beach Ridges Interspersed with Swales (BRIS) soil is considered as one of the problem soils found in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia due to its low fertility, high leaching rate and high surface temperature. Thus, it is not very suitable or non-productive for commercial planting of crops because it could not support the normal water needs for plant growth and will eventually affect the yield and quality of the produce.
