Effendy Abd WahidIn this study, for the first time we reporting the potential of white type edible jellyfish Lobonema smithii as antioxidant and collagen stimulator in wound healing process. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract and crude protein of the species were determined using 1, 1-dipheyl-2-picrylhrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging. In vivo, full thickness wounds were created on the dorsal area of control and treatment rats. The treatment rats were orally administrated with freeze-dried jellyfish powder (1000 mg/kg) while control rats were fed with normal pellet daily.Item Preliminary study on antibacterial activity of extracellular protein from coral mucous associated bacteria(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2007) Suvik AssawThe important of this study is to discover a novel antibiotic for pharmaceutical from marine bacteria. The aim of this study is to determine the antibacterial activity of an extracellular protein produced by coral-mucous associated bacteria activity. Culture coral-mucous associated bacteria from previous study were used as inoculums. The drop test assay and overlaid technique were used to screen antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. From a total of 21 strains, seven of them were shown an antibacterial activity, which were MD008 (Micrococcus varians), MDOl l (Cadacea darisae), MD012 (Serratia plymuthica), MD018 (Citrobacter younge), MD019 (Erwinia herbicola), MD022 (Klebsiella pneumonia subspecies) and MD024 (Aeromonas cariae). Strain MD018 and MD019 were shown the highest antibacterial activity on day 7 of incubation. Drop test assays, was revealed that extracellular protein from MD019 was responsible for antibacterial activity. Minimum inhibition concentration from MD019 was 10.6µg/ml with 10mm diameter of clear zone. Few marine bacteria source of bioactive component with antibacterial activity.Item Wound healing ability of white type edible jellyfish Lobonema smithii in white rats(Fakulti Pengajian Maritim dan Sains Marin, 2010-07) Suvik AssawWhite type edible jellyfish, Lobonema smithii were desalted, dried and extracted to formulate for oral consumption in white rats in wound healing study. Prior to that it was subjected to toxicity screening and tested for antioxidant activity. Methanolic and cold acetone protein precipitation extraction method was done to obtain methanol crude extract and crude protein extract.
