Growth and population of Perna viridis in raft culture, area in Muar coastal water of Malaysia
(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2013-04) Mohd Luthfi Omar
Growth and population of Perna viridis on mussel raft culture in Muar coastal waters were studied from August 2007 until July 2008. Asymptotic length (L∞), growth coefficient (K), natural mortality rates (M), fishing mortality rate (F), total mortality rate (Z), exploitation level (E) and maximum exploitation level (Emax) were calculated using FiSAT software to estimate the population status. From this study, asymptotic length (L∞) was 120.75mm and growth coefficient (K) was estimated at 0.66/year. Total mortality (Z) for Perna viridis was 1.83/year, while natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were 0.94 and 0.89/year respectively. During this study period, the Perna viridis growth performance index was (φ′) 3.98 and the exponent “b” of the length-weight relationship was 2.39. Exploitation level (E) of Perna viridis was 0.49 while the maximum allowable limit of exploitation (Emax) was 0.42. Higher exploitation level than maximum exploitation level indicates that the Perna viridis in this area was over-exploited.

A study on recruitment and early growth of green lipped mussel (Perna viridis) in Muar Coast
(Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2007) Mohd Luthfi Omar
Muar area is the mussel culture area especially in culturing green lipped mussel (Perna viridis). The availability of wild seed of green lipped mussel, this makes it easily to culture on the rope collector at the mussel platform. This study investigates the recruitment and early growth of Perna viridis at the rope collector and at the sea bottom. For rope collector, it divided into three parts which is upper, center and bottom part. Recruitment of Perna viridis spat in Muar coastal water shows highest peak on the beginning of August (24,900 indv/m 2 ) and it slowly decrease on the next month until the end of September shows the minimum recruitment (222.22 indv/m 2 ). The next month shows the recruitment slowly increases. While for the early growth shows the acceleration of growth rate increases 0.11 mm/week· 1 or 0.0002 mm/day" 1 • When rope divided to three parts, the recruitment on the center part shows highest settlement (35,000 2 indv/m ) compared to the upper part (27,500 indv/m 2 ) and the bottom part (12,200 2 indv/m ). For the early growth, on the initial 11 weeks shows highest growth of Perna viridis at the upper part, after 11 weeks the upper part shows declining on growth and the Perna viridis at bottom part shows increasing growth.
