Item The Changes of Sedimentological Characteristics in Kemaman Estuary, Terengganu, Malaysia(Middle-East Journal of Scientific Research, 2016) Nik Hani Shahira Nik Shirajuddin; Hasrizal Shaari; Khawar Sultan; Nur Sakinah Abdul Razak; Fathullah Abdullah; Rosnan YaakobThis study reports sedimentological properties of core sediments (length ~200 cm) from Kemaman Estuary, Malaysia and focuses on understanding depositional environment in a tropical estuarine setting by investigating grain size and morphological characteristic of the core sediment. The mean sediment size ranged from 4.97 to 7.22 Ć and is texturally classified as coarse silt to very fine silt (~55.84%). The cyclic trend in sediment grain size indicated a complex mix of marine and land based (riverine) processes under the influence of transportative and current action. The estuarine sediments are found to be poorly sorted and skewed pointing to the normal size distribution is influenced by finer grain sizes. Morphology of grain shape showed a dominant angular to sub-angular shape. This kind of grain angularity is mostly likely due to the shorter transport period (e.g. time and distance) and lack of maturity (i.e. sphericity and roundness). The dominance of silt and clay size fractions in the estuary can be attributed to depositional process under the influence of currents. Generally, the deposited sediments in the core sample seem to be dominantly from the terrestrial. For this work, sediment grain size, organic carbon, heavy metal and also sedimentation rates.Item The Spatial Distribution Of Al, Fe, Cu, Cd And Pb In The Surface Sediment Of Brunei Bay, Borneo During The Southwest And Northeast Monsoons(Journal of Sustainability Science and Management, 2016) Adiana Ghazali; Noor Azhar Mohamed Shazili; Joseph Bidai; Hasrizal ShaariA geochemical assessment of Al, Fe, Cu, Cd and Pb was carried out for the surface sediment of Brunei Bay. Samples were collected during July 2013 and January 2014 representing the Southwest and Northeast Monsoon respectively. Fe, Pb, Al and Cu were high in July 2013 samples whereas Cd had a similar range of concentration during both sampling periods. Cd showed no particular spatial distribution pattern whereas Fe and Pb were highly distributed at the transect stations compared to the coastal stations due to the river flushed out. In contrast, Al and Cu were uniformly distributed between all stations. The Al, Fe and Pb in Brunei Bay sediment were dominantly bound to the mineral fraction which is also an indicator of natural sources whereas Cu was more dominant in the ion exchangeable fraction which is the most bioavailable fraction.Item Spatial distribution of Selected Heavy Metals in Surface Sediments of the EEZ of the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia(International Journal of Oceanography, 2015-05) Hasrizal ShaariSpatial distribution of selected metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Co) in surface sediments in the EEZ of the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia was investigated. The aim of this paper is to determine the distribution pattern and pollution status of heavy metals in tropical shelf sediments since limited information is available.Heavymetal concentrations ranged between 207.58 and 491.33 šgā gā1 for Mn, 36.13 and 125.93 šgā gā1 for Zn, 14.49 and 22.33 šgā gā1 for Cu, 2.00 and 11.12 šgā gā1 for Co, 6.20 and 8.95% for Fe, and 0.94 and 6.62% for Al. The mean concentrations of heavy metals are in decreasing order as follows: Fe > Al > Mn > Zn > Cu > Co. Most metals registered low concentrations at the nearshore areas. Pearson correlation indicates that most of the metals are derived from the miscellaneous sources. Based on the EFs and Igeo, it is implied that the surface sediment trace metal levels in the study area might be enriched by anthropogenic sources. However, the PLI suggests that this area is not contaminated from the measured heavy metals. This work is important to register the current levels of metals so that any change in concentration can be monitored and managed
