    Climatic Classification for Agricultural Potential in Peninsular Malaysia

    Papadakis system of climate classification give special consideration into ecological requirements of the different agricultural crops and such that the classification indicates the agricultural potential and limitation in a region. This system also enable a useful interpretation of the possible land utilization types. An advantage of this system is that the meteorological data required for the classification are generally available in the country. A global system of classifying world climate such as Papadakis system has shown that this system can be used to classify the climate of Peninsular Malaysia to a great level of detail.

    Effect of Palm Oil Mill Sludge Cake on Growth of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) Grown on Bris Soil

    The roselle variety UKMR-2 was used in this study to determine the effect of palm oil mill sludge cake on growth of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) grown on Bris Soil. The roselle was planted in the field into polyethylene bags filled with Bris soil and POMSC at different rates as treatment. The palm oil mill sludge cake (POMSC) was applied at the following rates of 0 (treated as control), 10, 20, 30 and 40 t/ha rates and chicken manure at 20 t/ha was given as the standard treatment and then left for two weeks to allow for mineralization before sowing. Two-week-old seedlings were used as the planting materials.

    Effect of Regulated Deficit Irrigation on Nutrient Concentration in Leaves,Growth and Yield of Sorghum

    The effects of regulated deficit irrigation technique on nutrient concentration in leaves, growth and yield of sorghum was examined in a greenhouse at the School of Science and Food Technology, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. The experiments regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) consisted of a factorial combination of irrigation regimes and soil types laid in a randomised complete block design with eight treatments for each experiment which resulted into a total of sixteen treatments. Irrigation regimes were at four levels namely: I100, I75, I50 and I25 and the soil types were at two levels namely: Rhu Tapai and Rengam soil series.

    The Effect of Soil Parent Materials on Yield of Cocoa

The research results can provide basic information on potential reserves of nutrients to improve soil productivity for cocoa cultivation. Soil samples were collected from two locations (Rengam series soil of Granite and Kuantan series soil of Basalt parent material respectively). The collected soil samples were completely analyzed in laboratory.

    Physical Land Evaluation for Oil Palm Cultivation in District of Temerloh and Kuantan, Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia

    The FAO Framework for Land Evaluation was used for the development of a land evaluation system for oil palm cultivation in district of Temerloh and Kuantan, Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia. The combined limitation and parametric approach was used as it contributed to a more meaningful interpretation of the results. Eleven series soils were chosen to analyze the land evaluation system. The system of Sys et. al. was used for the evaluation using land characteristics.

    Potential and Viability of Chilli Cultivation Using Fertigation Technology in Malaysia

    Chilli, or Capsicum annum, is a high value cash crop. Cultivation of chilli had been done using the conventional method and fertigation system. There are two methods of fertigation system practiced in Malaysia, which are planting chilli under rain shelters and open fertigation and planting chilli without rain shelter. All three planting systems have their own advantages and disadvantages. This study was conducted to evaluate the costs and benefits of chilli cultivation using both the fertigation system and conventional methods. Data were obtained from the pilot project plot under MARDI and the Department of Agriculture. The cost-benefit analysis showed that the costs of production for chilli using both fertigation systems were RM1.19/kg (under the rain shelter) and RM1.56/kg (open fertigation), respectively, compared to RM2.03/kg using the conventional method. The net income per season per hectare for planting chilli using the fertigation system under rain shelter was RM105,654 and open fertigation was RM77,415, which were higher than the conventional method (RM55,900). The higher net income was due to the high yield of chilli, almost twofold per hectare, than the conventional method. The partial budget analysis also showed a higher benefit value than the implication value in the event of farmers switching from using conventional methods to chilli cultivation using both fertigation systems. Overall, chilli cultivation using fertigation technology is proven to improve chilli yield and has a high viability. The high cost or initial capital will be offset by the high production yield. This technology is also more environmentally friendly than the conventional methods and in accordance with the practice of sustainable agriculture development, besides conforming to the present national agriculture agenda.

    Technical Efficiency of Paddy Farming in Peninsular Malaysia

    Rice is the staple food for most of the people in the world. Rice also served as a basic food for Malaysian people. More than 300,000 people in Malaysia are paddy farmers and involved in small scale cultivation. Rice production especially in the granary area is expected to increase after the new incentive scheme was introduced by the government as a lot of budget had been spent for this incentive. In addition, the paddy farmers have faced the increase in cost of rice production almost in every year. This study was conducted to measure the technical efficiency of paddy farming in the East Coast and West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia which are MADA, KADA, IADA Penang and IADA KETARA by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The data were obtained by interviewing the paddy farmers using the well-structured questionnaires. The interviewed farmers were chosen randomly from the whole paddy farmers of each agency. For this function, this study has applied a non-probability sampling method that is a purposive sampling technique. The result showed that the IADA KETARA recorded the highest value which is 0.901 followed by MADA with 0.843, IADA Penang with 0.836 and KADA 0.607. The value of output slacks is zero and only for IADA KETARA. The KADA area operated with 0.017 as minimum output slacks, IADA-Penang with 0.332 as maximum output slacks and MADA was in the middle of the two with 0.159 output slacks. These showed the average level of shortfall in paddy production in the three granary areas.

    Technical Efficiency of Paddy Farming in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia

    The KADA and IADA KETARA are among important granary areas in Peninsular Malaysia producing paddy for domestic consumption. Both granaries are located in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia and involved with the new paddy scheme introduced by the Malaysian Government in 2008 during the world food crisis. This research was conducted to determine the best granary area in terms of technical efficiency (TE) based on two methods; Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). The study involved interviewing with 148 paddy farmers using open and close ended questionnaires and the respondents were randomly chosen. The results showed that based on DEA indicator, IADA KETARA recorded the highest TE which is 0.90 while KADA obtained only 0.61. Based on SFA indicator, IADA KETARA indicated 0.84 TE while KADA, 0.67. The results consistently showed the TE scores estimated under DEA (TE-vrs) and SFA methodologies for IADA KETARA is greater than KADA and they are statistically significant at 5% level in both areas. Thus, it can be concluded that IADA KETARA are the best managed paddy farms in terms of technical efficiency compared to KADA.
