Item The development of a new approach to determine the sediment variability in spatuality and temporally(Terengganu: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 2015-03) Abd Rahman Mat AminThe presence of suspended sediments (SS) along the coast and estuaries are mainly derived from river flow, tidal currents and ocean waves. In large quantities, the SS can alter the ecosystem of the area by limiting the level of light penetration into the deeper seabed. Recently, a number of algorithms have been developed to distinguish SS influenced area and clear water regions in coastal water areas but these algorithms require complicated computational analyses. Thus, a simple method is needed to accurately detect the presence of SS temporally and spatially needs to be developed. This study was conducted to detect the region that affected by SS along coastal line and estuaries by using remote sensing technique. In order to detect the region that affected by the SS on a daily basis, a simple algorithm that based on empirical technique was developed.Item Development of regional TSS algorithm over Penang using modis terra (250 m) surface reflectance product(Ekologia Bratislava, 2016) Abd Rahman Mat Amin; Khiruddin Abdullah; Hwee San Lim2, Muhd; Fauzi Embong; Fadhli Ahmad; Rosnan YaacobTotal suspended sediment (TSS) plays a significant role in the environment. Many researchers show that TSS has a high correlation with the red portion of the visible light spectrum. The correlation is highly dependent on geography of the study area. The aim of this study was to develop specific algorithms utilizing corrected MODIS Terra 250-m surface reflectance (Rrs) product (MOD09) to map TSS over the Penang coastal area. Field measurements of TSS were performed during two cruise trips that were conducted on 8 December 2008 and 29 January 2010 over the Penang coastal area. The relationship between TSS and the surface reflectance of MOD09 was analysed using regression analysis. The developed algorithm showed that Rrs are highly correlated with the in-situ TSS with R2 is 0.838. The result shows that the Rrs product could be used to estimate TSS over the Penang area.
