The present study is to develop a Fiber Optic Sensor (FOS). The sensor is designed to detect the optical loss in decibel ( dB). The methodology used is first to collect the faulty data or the error on the data in relation with Telekom Malaysia in its delivering network of fiber optic. From the data collected, the fault or the error of Telekom Malaysia's network due to fiber optic factor is 2.5 % annually. So far there is no loss of optic sources has been reported. Fiber optic factor is due to the newly installed fiber optic cable which only used for three years. However, it is possible that fiber optic cable will degrade and unfit for use depending on its duration of usage. FOS is also expected to function as a sensor that can indicate and to alarm the working staffs about the loss optical loss. FOS is designed by can be installed directly at the location or real time monitoring to assist the working staffs to detect the failure of the fiber optic cable. As a matter of fact, in Terengganu state, the fiber optic cable used involved 47 long distances communication links and 102 local links. Each long distance links is connected with the single mode fiber while the short distances links are connected with multi mode fibers. However, the result of the study do not produce positive result. This is due of FOS unable to measure the loss of the network from the respective telecommunication company. This is due to the respond time is in between 850 and 1500 ns, compared to the present FOS which uses LDR type Cadmium Sulfide used into present study can only function effectively from the range 500 to 800 ns. It is suggested to use LDR type Germanium which has the response time between 850 to 1300 ns.en_US
