Authors: Ng Khai Shin
Abstract: Investigation on the configuration of a towline model incorporated with ship towing system performance is obviously necessary to attain navigational towing safety at sea. Instead of employing typical towing models such as single and symmetrical bridle towline models, an asymmetrical bridle towline configuration is then proposed to improve the ship towing performance during operation. This thesis presents Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis on the asymmetrical bridle towline model with respect to its effect on course stability and seakeeping performance of the ship towing system in calm water and waves, respectively. Several towing parameters such as various towing angles, towing speeds and towline lengths have been taken into accounts in the simulation. Here, the course stability performance of the towed barge has been analysed in three degrees-of-freedom i.e., surge sway and yaw motions. Meanwhile, the seakeeping characteristic has been assessed at various wavelengths and wave directions involving five degrees-of-freedom i.e., surge, sway, yaw, heave and pitch motions.

Detection of aquatic pollutants using luminescent bactteria

Title: Detection of aquatic pollutants using luminescent bactteria
Authors: Aty Atiqah Muhassan
Abstract: Nowadays, luminescent bacteria as a sensing organism to detect the aquatic pollutants
have been widely used. In this study, luminescent bacteria were identified and the effect
of different concentrations of pollutants towards the density of luminescent bacteria was
carried out. The luminescent bacteria were isolated from the ink of the squids. Then, the
Gram staining was done to observe the shape of the luminescent bacteria. The bacteria
were identified using VITEK. Besides that, the bacteria were tested with different NaCl
concentration (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 % (w/v)) and at temperature (4, 26, 28, 37 and 40
°
C).
Then, toxicity test was carried out with 1.5 ml of toxicants Cd, Zn Cb, HgS04,
Pb(N03)2,
diazinon and malathion (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 ppm) were added to 1.5 ml of bacterial
suspension in a cuvette. As for control, 1.5 ml of saline solution was added to 1.5 ml of
bacterial suspensions.

Remote estimation of sea surface salinity (SSS) from satellite-derived cdom in coastal watrer of Terengganu

Title: Remote estimation of sea surface salinity (SSS) from satellite-derived cdom in coastal watrer of Terengganu
Authors: Nur Farhana Md Zahair
Abstract: This study focuses on empirical closure to the estimation of sea surface salinity (SSS)
by using remote sensing of ocean colour. There are two types of important
relationship of water optical properties. The first includes the understanding of
characteristics of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) along the conservative
mixing in salinity gradient. The second one is the relationship between CDOM and
water-leaving radiance (upwelling and downwelling radiance). Based on the analysis
that we have conducted using statistical analysis, the best CDOM absorption in ultra
violet wavelength such as 350nm and 380nm can be estimated using blue green ratio
as Rrs (412/547) with value ofR
2
= 0.9018. Next, the seasonal dynamic of salinity in
coastal water area is determined from satellite ocean colour. During wet and well
mixed season (Northeast Monsoon) CDOM was almost mixing up well with salinity
but acted vice versa during the dry season (Southwest Monsoon). With these results,
CDOM and salinity can be estimated by satellite ocean colour as well.
